People have pets in that area, that's also where they store things like water (which would be frozen unless it's pressurized and heated). Regional planes aren't pressurized most of the time since they never go that high up.

Wait, so why is everyone hating on the fat person? Perhaps they are fat due to sheer laziness, or perhaps they have a legitimate medical condition which inhibits thyroid function, but either way they aren't the problem. The problem with this story is how the AIRLINE handled it. The normal sized passenger, who was there first anyways, shouldn't have been asked to give up her seat. The overweight passenger should have been forced to wait until a flight opened up that could accommodate them.

The airline did the right thing. Why would they keep a fat person waiting so long? Its like a teenager giving his seat to an old woman on the bus. Sure he was there first but the granny needed it more.
