The fact that the trailer didn't sell me on it at all just makes me want to watch it even more
It looks very slice of lifey, and i wasn't interested at first at all.
I watched and was stunned how good it was. There are quite a few twists in that i never saw coming. Its very gripping, to the point that i was yelling at my computer and probably woke up my neighbors
-snip-
^Holy shit.
^Holy shit.
That's not from the same movie, though Kimi no na wa looks just as good (minus the awful CG near the end)
i actually had that shinjuku train one as my wallpaper for months once
didnt realize it was from him
Is there any way to watch this right now for a filthy European like me?
I watched it in cinemas in scotland and tbh I thought it had great animation and directing but the rest wasn't that special. It felt... more straightforward than Makoto Shinkai's other works. [sp]The mid plot twist was pretty cool though[/sp]
Watched the movie in a theater last week. It's a bit overrated; anime clichés disserve the film sometimes.
Still, it's a great feel good movie with splendid sceneries. Some moments are really well captured.
it hasn't really even had a proper american/canadian/european/etc. release yet, only a limited oscar release and a South Korea/Japan/China Release.
there isnt even a proper pirated copy of it so literally no one outside of the above releases can actually watch it properly.
probably gonna explode profit wise if that happens
That's not true, it had a significant UK release with mainstream marketing (eg London underground) and was shown in many cinemas in both subbed and dubbed format
Haven't watched the movie, hyped as hell though, we could use more anime movies reaching mainstream to show the medium can be used to tell good stories while also showing that incredible art.
Every frame is literally a work of art with an amazing amount of detail and artistic ability. Not spoilers, this is a different movie from the same guy:

5 centimeters per second?
damn that movie was terribly depressing.
I saw this movie on a plane, and it was pretty darn good. As the others mentioned, the animation quality is beautiful. I thought the plot got a little bit convoluted, but still quite engaging.
Saw it on my ana flight. The animation was jaw dropping but I was disappointed in the story. It was a good concept but the [sp] time travel and meteor shit was way more complicated than it needed to be. And why didn't they just exchange phone numbers at the start?[/sp]
I watched the leaked version with low quality. I'll probably watch it again when actual good quality video pops up, but I liked it overall. In my opinion though, if it does make it to the Oscars, Zootopia should still win best animated film, regardless of the iffiness of the Oscar judging panel. I don't know the split up of art categories for awards, but it should definitely win something there if applicable, because it's definitely the best looking thing I've watched this year.
It'd be funny if it got nominated for best foreign film as well and won that.

[Sp]Its heavily implied that time spent in the other body is a dreamlike state, its their excuse for not acting rational while swapped. [/sp]

[SP]I guess exchanging numbers with a stranger right away was too awkward in the beginning.[/SP]
The movie had some really great art much like the other films and projects produced by that team. The story got weird about 2/3rds through.
The ending though.. Fuck that ending
I was able to watch this on a plane and it was really hard to hold in my tears for the people sitting next to me.
Glad it's going to the top, it deserves it.
I watched this thinking it was a Sol comedy and not was I wrong. Really recommend seeing this when possible.
From the trailer, animation looks incredible, but the story premise didn't hook me at all. Slice-of-life + body swapping ain't much to build a movie off of. Ofc a 1 and a half minute trailer can hardly do any film justice.
I don't see why not. Some of the best movies of all time revolve around the dialogue and character interaction/development as opposed to an interesting story or action. (Breakfast club?)

[sp]What confused me even more was why didn't they look at what year it was when they made diary logs on a smart phone of all things.[/sp]
If you take inflation into account it still has about $100 mil to go.
funimation is finally gonna do a proper theater release in the US and Canada on april 7th
It get praise everywhere but there is practically no way to see this movie outside of Japan. It is so infuriating.
I just want to watch this movie.
Apparently Funimation is working to put this movie out in theaters in the west later this year. I saw an ad for it when I went to watch One Piece: Film Gold in theaters last week.

Speak of the devil, lmao.

Sure there are other ways that it could excel other than story, I'm just saying that didn't come across in the trailer. The trailer didn't have anything interesting in it except the animation quality.

Madman already brought it to Australia (as hinted earlier in the thread)

As I mentioned earlier, probably the biggest plothole I think is [sp]not recognizing the huge meteor that wiped out a motherfucking town
I'm not sure if their universe has meteors that wipes out cities on a daily basis but Taki not recognizing the town that suffered the catastrophe of a giant meteor demolishing it was a bit strange to me[/sp]
Otherwise though, if you ignore plotholes it isn't a bad film. It gave me visual novel vibes where the story is fairly fleshed out with good emotional impact

Trailer really doesn't do it justice, as unfortunately a lot of what makes the movie so good can't be shown.
Also if anyone sees this and decides to pirate it, don't. The only version on the net is a 480p chinese hardsubs version. This is absolutely a movie that would suffer if you saw it like that. See it at the cinema or wait until the BDs are released in march or maybe as late as april.

Damn funimation really dropped the ball, really glad I got see it when it came to Los Angeles for a week in december for Oscars qualification.

i'd also highly recommend his more recent kotonoha no ni wa which features shinkai's more matured visual style and benefits greatly from improved character art (5cm/s is super pretty but the character art was really lacking in comparison)
