The source says they knew of 203 structural problems, I'm pretty sure they probably knew of that as well.
"They did not know that a vital part of the engine ignition system was within "Oh fuck I broke it" length" was referring to the first moon landing.
Of course this was an extremely bad case, but both sides risked lives to prove who had the best phallic manlaunching system.
But at least the USA attempted to make things as safe as possible.
Of course this was an extremely bad case, but both sides risked lives to prove who had the best phallic manlaunching system.
Except the US were nowhere near as bad with safety as the USSR. The very nature of a political climate in which telling the important truth (shit's fucked, for god's sake don't launch) results in being sent to Siberia is not conducive to things getting fixed, and generally working properly.

Could have made that a bit clearer, but fair enough. However that was just general incompetence rather than complete disregard of obvious structural problems.
I think that may be the main capsule, as it says only a chipped heel bone remained.
The caption under it in the article is:
Vladimir Komarov’s charred remains were displayed at his state funeral on April 26, 1967
I never said the USA was as bad as the USSR when it came to astronaut safety.

Now that's a true friend :frown:
I never said the USA was as bad as the USSR when it came to astronaut safety.
That's what your post seemed to imply. Be clearer in your posts.

Because I pointed out that America almost suffered the loss of the first men to walk on the moon because of a stupid ignition design?
Because I pointed out that America almost suffered the loss of the first men to walk on the moon because of a stupid ignition design?
:sigh: No.
Let's examine your post again.
"Of course this was an extremely bad case, but both sides risked lives to prove who had the best phallic manlaunching system."
The underlined part implies equality in the risk taking, which is quite clearly not the case. Phallic manlaunching system implies a certain level of pointlessness, of doing it merely to brag, exacerbating the wastefulness of deaths. The overall impression being the US was just as bad as the USSR at safety.

Sorry. Still mostly drenched in sweat and a bit dehydrated. Please ignore my posts for the next hour, as they will be just as retarded.
Guy was a serious badass.
Rarely do I ever get emotional over something I read on the internet, but the "if I don't go they will send Yuri" and imagining the conversation that took place between his wife and friend into a video call moments before his death.
Holy fuck, I'm glad I read this thread, I'd hate to miss out on this little tid-bit of history.
I have heard before that he died cursing the people who put him in the capsule, but i didnt know he knew it was faulty, and that he did it to save his friend.
What a truly great man.
Guy deserves a fucking statue here in the U.S. Knowing he'd die but still doing it just to save his friend, that's fucking poetic.
This is amazingly courageous. I'll have to make a stop by the bookshelves and pick myself up a copy of this book.
Last night my girlfriend and I were discussing whether or not altruism really exists. This is the fucking proof that it does.
Vladimir Kamarov is a hero as far as I'm concerned, and if ever put in the situation where I have to put my life on the line in place of a friends, I hope I can do the same thing.
Holy shit.
INB4 some jackass decides to post video of them shooting down Soyuz in Carl on Duty Black Cops.

Wait, that happens?

I bet you're a barrel of laughs at a party
I bet you're a barrel of laughs at a party
Actually, now the you mention it; I am! I'm also the class comedian at uni!
The more you know!
Wait, that happens?
Yeah. You use a prototype Javelin missile. (May be the Valkyrie Rocket but I'm very sure its the Javelin).
Yeah. You use a prototype Javelin missile. (May be the Valkyrie Rocket but I'm very sure its the Javelin).
...When is this? I don't seem to recall it at all...
Also, pertaining to the thread, this guy was fucking hardcore. He didn't want his bro to die so he went? What a badass.
Yeah. You use a prototype Javelin missile. (May be the Valkyrie Rocket but I'm very sure its the Javelin).
Er... no. The Javelin was developed in this century. Also, Javelin missiles can NOT hit moving air targets. At all. Call of Duty MW2 completely turned realism on its head. You may also be interested to know that there are no shoulder-fired missiles IRL which have cameras on them, and that AT4 rockets can not be, nor ever have been, guided projectiles.
America sent an aluminum pod full of fighter pilots into space with the computing power of an alarm clock. If it wasn't for an errant pen in the crew cabin, Armstrong and Friends would still be on the moon.
What the fuck is it with you people and brining up the faults of the US whenever the faults of Russia are brought up.
It's as if you lot still think the Cold War exists. [sp]it ended 20 years ago[/sp]
Both countries are equally fucked up and made some terrible decisions in their history.

What game is this from?

Its Call of Duty, they don't care about realism.
I think that may be the main capsule, as it says only a chipped heel bone remained.
Indeed. It melted and basically encased his own remains (which were just bones at that point) inside, the only exposed part which could actually be recovered being his heel bone.
The bone, along with the main capsule, is shown here inside of a coffin, however. Komarov's remains were melted down along with the capsule and placed inside the wall of the Kremlin, with his heel bone.
this isn't news
