Possibly uniformed colonist here, but aren't the DUP in favour of a soft Brexit due to the border? If it does, May is either gonna have to look super weak to the populace and the EU to turn back on the hard brexit stance, which of course the EU will take advantage of, or lose the support of DUP.
I think they are. This coalition is going to be a mess. I hope it crashes and burns.
I think they are. This coalition is going to be a mess. I hope it crashes and burns.
Unfortunately, I expect it to die a slow and painful death as it scrapes and crawls it's way through a full term. They aren't going to get much done, other than making a total mess of Brexit, but they will certainly prevent anything productive being done by anyone else for the next few years. I just hope they aren't in a position to make any more devastating attacks on our healthcare, our police, and poor and disabled people while in their current weakened state.

DUP are a disgrace to western world and unfit to be in parliament.
I love how transparent it is that the DUP were picked because they were the only viable way to gain 8 seats. They won by default.
Thank goodness all shes doing is "finishing brexit" and then fucking off. ... ... wait, I'm hearing that she's also going to decrease my internet security and get rid of human rights laws. I don't want that
that's included in the "finishing brexit" package, don't want any pesky EU human rights and internet protection laws getting in the way
We obviously need a monarchy
that's included in the "finishing brexit" package, don't want any pesky EU human rights and internet protection laws getting in the way
Not trying to be picky because, yeah May and human rights seem to be mutually exclusive, but the ECHR is completely seperate agreement from the European Union and leaving the EU does not unsubscribe us from the ECHR. Nothing to prevent May from trying to rip that up too, but those moderates in DUP will stop it, right? Right? ;)
i love how kensington flipped on the guardian tracker. only one of labour vs tori that flipped. marks no safe haven for the toris next time around.
The more I read about DUP the more I think about people like Wesboro Baptist church. THat's a scary thought that these people are now in power.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/6g9m85/theresa_may_is_looking_to_form_a_coalition_with/ statements and policies by DUP: tl;dr for the people who just want the memes:
I can only hope the less horrible Tory's contentiously object to working with shitbags and this deal with the devil falls apart.
The fact that May's power play has ended up with her having to form a minority government with the Irish is fucking hilarious. They are going to be in an awful position for negotiating Brexit.
As someone else said you wouldn't want to call the DUP Irish. They identify as British and would be extremely upset if called Irish no matter which way you state it.
DUP are a disgrace to western world and unfit to be in parliament.
Yeah the polarisation of Northern Irish politics into essentially the fairly hardline parties of "do you want an United Ireland (Sinn Fein) or not (DUP)?" has had this awful affect. UUP are fairly moderate from what I've heard and aren't associated with Ian Paisley's ghastly beliefs. I don't think a majority of NI people are represented in that regard by the DUP at all, but you'd need to ask someone from NI about that.
I know but I can see it weaking once the realities of Brexit become clearer. I certainly think that there are moderate unionists can be convinced - does the DUP really represent their interests well vs the UUP and more moderate parties? I think that will have an effect.
So you're treating it as an oppertunity for actual terrorists to gain power and achieve the votes they gained through a campaign of violence. Remember the La Mon bombings and tell me anything Sinn Fein is good for the country. Personally I hope for a party such as the Green Party to be able to in the comings years take Northern Ireland as a stronghold, not for members of the IRA nor the bigots of the DUP
the papers, and Murdoch especially, have fallen upon May like a fucking wolfpack. hahah, take that remoanians the only way this could have been better would be a corbyn coalition victory but good god it's so satisfying to watch this happen. all she had to do was NOT call an election and watch labour turn into an irrelevance, but she just had to give jezza a chance to lead a glorious campaign. if I were a tory I'd be just about ready to slit my throat.

Has the coalition been signed into power yet?
Has the coalition been signed into power yet?
no. I don't think they've actually come up with a deal yet, they're still negotiating
"[del]he's[/del] they're really actually good guys to the LGBT and left, dudes! it's just a red herring to get votes!" HMMMM WHERE HAVE I HEARD THIS BEFORE
We really should've looked after NI for the DUP to be their go-to...
This COULD go against the Good Friday Agreement. The UK government is supposed to play the role of independent mediator between the Unionists and Republicans (or whatever the labels are) and not show favor to either side. By entering a deal with the DUP, they're basically going right against this term of the agreement.
