Some countries have a system where the loser usually pays the legal fees of the winning party. It's more popular in Europe, but I'm not sure if Canada has a similar system.
It's pretty standard - the important thing to note here though, that that usually works in civil proceedings, whereas this is criminal.

I'm fairly sure in Germany this goes for criminal suits too, but only in one direction so you don't have to pay extra if found guilty. I didn't actually check though so I may be wrong.
(Many people here have legal insurance so it ultimately often doesn't matter that much exactly how they don't have to pay if found not guilty.)

I checked: You do get legal fees reimbursed in criminal trials after a not guilty verdict here, but the amount is capped at some point.
(IIrc up to three) duty counsels are paid for regardless of the verdict though, and you normally have time to suggest one afaik.

CBC is usually pretty great. Hopefully this gets investigated.

To be fair they seem to be quoting the judge here so it's relevant information to the article.
I'm so glad we don't have these retarded laws in the US. I know he was found innocent but the fact that they even had the trial is a joke.
