School officials say they are the first public school district in the country to give every kindergartner an iPad.
School officials say this is totally not school district dick waving.
Am I missing something? Why is everyone against this?
you can be randomly searched in school? for a phone? surely that's just a breach of liberty
for "weapons" or "drugs" (or any other reason they come up with, they can take anything they want as long as they say it could be dangerous) but they don't need to ask anyone, any staff can stop you and go through all your shit and it's not a breach of anything since you agree to it in the forms you have to sign to go to school and not going to school sends your parents to jail so it's just another example of how texas has freedom in a noose
Am I missing something? Why is everyone against this?

waste of money you could do that exact same thing using some cheap ass programs or just the internet on an old XP computer (which most schools have in abundance anyway)

You can do everything you just said with textbooks, plus it wouldn't cost $200,000 to do so too. Children this young shouldn't be granted ipads, even if it's for education purposes.
And so begins the next generation of annoying hipsters.
I'm going to laugh when they break them.
Whatever happened to learning to write, read from textbooks etc.
Apparently most of Facepunch doesn't even know what hipsters are. The stereotype goes that hipsters don't like things that are too 'mainstream'. Well guess what? The iPad is mainstream.
Wow, they get Ipads while my school has outdated textbooks, totally fair.
My 5 year old cousin used her dad's iPhone since she was 2 and learned how to do math from it [editline]17th September 2011[/editline] I still don't think this was the best idea though
This would be a great idea if it weren't so damn expensive
Spending more on education won't magically improve the quality thereof. We already spend more per student than any other country. Look at Detroit for fuck's sake, they spend more than the national average...
Wow, they get Ipads while my school has outdated textbooks, totally fair.
Reminds me of that video I saw in Physics promoting Nuclear Power. It was filmed in Chernobyl a year before the incident...
My school is giving all of it's students ipads this November. At least they can be somewhat useful (not really) for High school students but why the fuck would you get kindergardeners ipads??? I think my school district is wasting their money. I'd rather have proper heating and air conditioning in every room in the school, rather than ipads that really wont get used for their intended purpose.
Seems to me like a huge variety of learning tools could be used via an ipad. They can learn shapes, letters, identify animals and things, and a massive variety of other simple tasks that kindegarteners learn all while the results can be reviewed by the teacher to see weaknesses in particular students. I don't know why you are immediately writing it off.
There are better, cheaper tablets tbh. But we shouldn't even be spending that money on tablets regardless.
These schools don't know how to use their money at all. Rarely do they actually spend on something that will improve the quality of education but instead buy stupid shit like this. Schools now having iPads and Smartboards and such make me think that these administrations somehow believe that having the latest technology will improve education without having to improve how and what material is taught.
I get the idea, but I think this should've been thought through some more. Kids don't... always treat their school materials very kindly. Maybe it'll be a bit different with an iPad because it's shiny and more interactive and fun, but still, we're talking about kindergarten kids here. I vividly remember putting way too much pressure on my pens around that time. Could break some hardware in this case. Can't help but wonder if an alternative would've been better. Something more damage resistant and maybe with less processing power. Don't know how child-safe iPads are in general, but I you get impressions from here and there. This is a really high budget project and it could backfire easily. I'm all for new approaches, but someone should've put more thought into this I think.
Maybe if it was a high school or a college, but this? are you kidding me?
So... they hand them out to kindergarteners that don't need them at all but not to highschoolers and college students.. you know.. the people that actually fucking need them?
This reminds me that last year our school announced that it was in debt (which isn't the best thing for s school to do) and then they announced they bought new mac books.
If you're actually stupid enough to spend $200,000 on ipads, why don't they give them to more mature children, in say middle or high school? A kindergartner would probably break the fucking thing within five minutes of receiving it.
How about not at all? I work at a high school that just distributed iPads to all it's students. School has been session for 7 days now and already two have been totaled and four have been jailbroken. Luckily we can detect this and punish the students, but let me tell you now, kids of any grade just don't give a shit. The past five years we've supplied MacBooks to the students and now only a couple hundred hundred have survived. If you take a look at our equipment you'll see deep scratches, cracked plastic cases, severe discoloration and burn marks. Noone gives a shit because it's "not theirs". Kinda like throwing a party in someone else's house. This is a pathetic waste of money, as the facility I work in doesn't appear to be repaired since the 70s. There is mold, the wood paneling is falling off, the school needs a new paint job badly, and the roof leaks everywhere. The room where we kept some spare printers sprung a leak over night due to old water pipes and ruined all the equipment. The incompetence of the school district administration is unmatched.
This isn't going to end well, looks like they're going to download fart apps and blow money on their virtual farm.
I am outraged by this, they should get a better tablet like the galaxy tab!!! WOoT ANDROID!!
How the fuck can America still afford to waste money on shit like this?
I can imagine the booger-coated screens :v:
This is just stupid, one of the kids will end up spilling water or something on it and get electrocuted.
I don't think they'd be able to sell them if they could kill you so easily.
This is just stupid, one of the kids will end up spilling water or something on it and get electrocuted.
Less stupid people in the future!
I'm English, I have no idea how it works across the pond :v:
How what works? :v:
Oh yeah, great. Give some expensive equipment to little kids that will probably break it.
Why are people so crazy over iPads? I haven't really seen it here in England but good God it sounds bad over the water from reading this story
