Well compared to what the USA is throwing away on useless shit i found this pretty fucking awesome, sure the money could be spent on better things but why the fuck not.
We don't do nuclear power plants in the netherlands, and what would be the point of that? The point of this is that we'll have a fucking mountain to do winter sports on.
Exept we have 3.
1 Normal one in Borsele.
2 Test reactor at the Technical university of Delft.
3 Medical reactor in Petten. (Creates isotopes used in xrays)
I like this idea of a hughe mountain in the Netherlands, it costs alot but it would be a great boost for the economy (both building it and the profit afterwards)

Sorry its all I could think of.

Noticed how I said power plants? Exactly. And afaik the one in Borsele is decommissioned?
Why do I keep seeing Dutch people coming in Here saying "well America is also doing something.". How does that change the fact that your nation is spending 200 billion dollars on a fake mountain?

I would prefer to spend 270 billion on a mountain where we could make some profit of then spending almost 1600 billion dollar on the army
1. a natural elevation of the earth's surface rising more or less abruptly to a summit, and attaining an altitude greater than that of a hill, usually greater than 2000 feet (610 meters).
2. a large mass of something resembling this, as in shape or size.
Per definition it is a real mountain.
The truth is that almost every country on this planet does something bad with their money.
I'm Dutch and I approve of this.
projected between 40bn and 270bn, thats quite a large error margin
and couldnt this money be spent on you know, that boring helpful shit like curing diseases or feeding the third world
That's because building mountains hasn't really been delved into much before so is hard to predict costs for. And the latter can be said for any government scheme.
Personally I think it's good idea, if risky and costly. It'll create plenty of construction, architectual, book keeping, tourism and estate agent jobs as well as increasing the educational range of sports and housing oppertunities once completed.
Wicked, but I'd rather have the money spent on a Mars base or something.
Guys, stop bitching.
This is awesome.
The only better use for this money is giving it to charity or to SpaceX or/and NASA.
It's like asking 'Why build the pyramids?' (Yes I know why, but still, religion doesn't count)
This money would of been put to waste anyway.
It'll be an awesome hotel.

Well this is becoming something bigger then an hotel, from what i read, the inside of the mountain can be used for a city complete with train and shit and the mountain can be used for skiing and climbing/walking.
The argument that the money could be better spent is sound, but it doesn't apply here. It's a majorly corporate sponsored project, the money will never be spent on anything other than what the corporations deem as good investments. They won't suddenly go "fuck it, let's give the 270bn to Africa instead."
This sounds like something out of The Onion.
Hive City.
Am I the only one that's thought this so far?
Whoever came up with this idea had to be high as a fucking kite.
Why don't they just go all the way and build a fucking arcology?

you know what's funny? with the money the US has spent on wars recently, you could have built FOURTEEN artificial mountains
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/much-wars-cost-report-says-4-trillion-130934180.html
Unlike most of you, I think them building an artificial mountain would be cool. I would consider it to be another wonder than man has made that would last for centuries.

Stonehenge is nowhere near as big and thats lasted 5000 years.
Oh hey yeah that's cool guys it's not like we have cancer and aids or anything.
Didn't they just come out with a Vaccine for cancer, and a cure for AIDS, or HIV or something?

Because its just a bunch of rocks. There isn't anything to rot, wear out, need repair, etc.

So is a mountain.
So is a mountain.
The definition of a mountain is only one page back.
A mountain can be of any natural material or artificial material as long as it has a mountain-y shape and is at least 610 meters tall.
Its projects like this that help define a generation, stuff like this means we don't have to to live in a post 9/11 world instead we can be the people who built a fucking moutain just because we could.
The netherlands sorta rock. First all that shit with the rebuilding land in the middle of THE FUCKING OCEAN, having tons of your country under sea level but still living there, having WAY too much fucking money for how small a country they are, and now this
I support this because why the fuck not the people of the 2000's need to toss something in to the whole you know lasting for all time shit other than our nuclear waste :downs:
So is a mountain.
They're talking about a big hollow 7000ft tall mountain shaped...thing. Unless I read the article wrong.
