I'd say it could be fine. CGI faces can look good. Just look at CGI Jeff Bridges in "TRON: Legacy". Rogue One made some fatal mistakes which hinged mostly on the animation itself, so if they really put their all into making a CGI Carrie, I think they could pull it off.
CG faces really overdo the animation 90% of the time and it weirds me out. Actually, i think thats a problem with a lot of CGI people is that they move like CGI people instead of people-people half the time.
I don't think they're gonna offscreen death such a major character. And yeah it's too late to rework shit for episode 8 I would think without causing a release date delay, which I imagine they REALLY don't want. Assuming they weren't already killing her character in 8, I'd expect a cgi stand-in death scene at the start of episode 9. Which is gonna be awful for so many reasons.
From what I've heard about Episode VIII Lucasfilm prepared for an occurence where Carrie's health would leave her unable to film her piece in Episode IX. Filming TFA might have been more exhausting for her than we previously thought.

Arnold in Terminator Genysis looked believable enough but there's a limit when they open their mouths surely

They already *look* real (though some still look better than others, e.g. CG Arnold), they just don't move like they're real. And that's a problem that will only get better as animators get more experienced at making CG actors.

But also yeah that horrid cgi Tarkin revival for rouge one didn't give me much faith either. He looked like he was made of wax and I had no idea going in that there was even going to be a cgi character like that.

Rogue One got it all wrong by exaggerating said micro-expressions to a point where it looked like every muscle in CGI Cushing's face looked like it was in constant motion, and that's not how human faces move. So if they can get that under control I think it'll be fine.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but now I have 2 people on pictures in my room that have died this year. 4 out of 6 pictures is that... Pictures I wanted to hang up, for the memories and love for stuff they have been a part or produced. Is it weird that people get sad about it, when literally huge names you have known and taken inspiration from dies between each other in less then a year?

Peter Cushing wasn't one to have a doe expression, or flush his cheeks or dart his eyes around, he always gave a straight and stern look.
Like fr am I the only one who thought that the CGI Leia in Rogue One was great? Tarkin's first scene was weird for me, and after that it looked natural when there was more people crowded around. But the Leia one looks like 100% great to me.
We don't even know if this was caused by her history with drugs yet, it's a possibility but people are just jumping to conclusions.
She had a heart attack at sixty after a huge history with a drug known to cause heart attacks, a drug that ripped Billy Mays out of our hands right out of the blue while he was in his prime via cardiac problems. Of course people are tying it to drugs. Even she tied it to drugs before it happened, she mentioned in one of her substabce abuse interviews that she could feel the effects of all that coke looming over her. At this point I would only be shocked if it was shown NOT to be drugs. None of us are saying she was chopping up lines on the airplane's tray table, but we know that coke messes your heart up something fierce and that it can kill you decades after your last hit.
My first crush ever...
if you live in a developing country with a low quality of life yeah sure
As opposed to the first world countries where women die at 60 from heart attacks.
FUCK
This 2016 meme is taking away from the people who are actually dying.
That doesn't make sense.
As opposed to the first world countries where women die at 60 from heart attacks.
Woman with a notorious history of substance abuse*
I never understood the faux importance people place on minor celebrities; and act like the world is over when they die (as if they have religiously followed them for their entire life). Anyways, rest in peace Ms. Fisher, don't do drugs kids.
No please no
RIP Carrie Fisher.

It is okay to feel sadness over something, regardless of how close or far to it you are. amendment : Carrie Fisher was not a minor celebrity, either. She did a lot of work in the later years polishing scripts along with being a strong advocate and voice for mental illness and substance abuse awareness.
yes and in 2016 a lot of popular ones died thats our point
but she was just 60 not like 80 or something
I didn't even grow up with Star Wars but the movies had a pretty profound impact on me when I did finally see them that this hits me pretty hard. Especially knowing her words on mental illness and substance abuse.

What? Oh my god." (people have actually said this in this thread) Like her health complications came out of nowhere. People are treating this like the Dalai Lama was just murdered. The shock and surprise to her having health complications makes me wonder if those people even know who she actually was.
With how quiet her family had been, I felt like this was coming but it still hit me like a truck when I saw it this morning. God damn it. Rip Carrie Fisher.
It really sucks that this came out of nowhere and now she's just dead. Seriously, don't fuck around with drugs. I wonder what they're going to do now for episode 8. I imagine unless they use a stand in, they're going to have to throw out big sections of the script.
What a shame. Funny enough, the best thing Carrie Fisher did in my eyes wasn't starring in a big blockbuster but rather her and Paul Simon's divorce, since it at least partially inspired Graceland which is one of the best albums ever made.
