If you look away from the much better licensing option, there isn't really anything new. They've had their engine available for free since forever. When they announced this years ago this was big news because they were the only new engine out you could use for free and gave you the ability to mod it with c++ and not some script language like ue3 had.
Well I guess you get more frequent updates if you pay 10$ a month. Their free sdk releases have always had major bugs so to me this seems like a good way to cash in on beta testing from the experience I've had with cryengine. :v:
real talk - anyone who works with source should get a fucking medal. source is one of the shittiest engines to work with out on the market.
I found it quite easy compared to any other tools. That could just me, though.
Edit: I'm assuming you mean the free SDK....right?
the visual scripting UE4 has has nothing compared to Crytek's, i mean, they had this amazing tool since 2007, i started making multiplayer maps for crysis in 2008, and in 24 hours i had already created more than i would in hammer in the same timeframe, flowgraphs allowed mappers to alter the fucking gameplay of the game without use of mods or hacks, all packed in one map. Crytek didn't exploit this because they didn't really care about multiplayer at the time, nor do they now i suspect. It's so much fun working with flowgraphs, it wasn't very powerful in MP because of lack of support because level designers are a minority lets face it, but in SP you can literally interact with everything in the engine.
What i mean is, what Epic is doing now with UE4, Crytek has done this years ago and don't be fooled with the super HD textures and shaders on UE4, Cryengine is the most powerful tool in regards to scalability and modularability. CE has it's flaws as in every engine, but it's the most underestimated engine of this decade. It makes source look like shit actually.
EDIT: To be honest, any modern engine makes Source look like shit nowadays. Source had it's time. it's time for Source 2!
interesting things happening with cryengine
they also got it working natively on linux a couple of days ago

Hehe
you could say
that's how he rolls
I still think unreal4 might be more easier for making a game (make a quick prototype with blueprint) but this is awesome!
I've always preferred Unreal to Crytek. All of the games developed on Unreal run flawlessly for me, but Crytek's run like shit. (And don't even seem to look better)

I'm kind of a CryeEngine fan but I would agree. I would say use CryeEngine if you want to use C++ but now that UE4 offers this too I don't know anymore..
I haven't used UE4 much but from the looks of it it looks a lot easier to use and there's more help to get from the community.
real talk - anyone who works with source should get a fucking medal. source is one of the shittiest engines to work with out on the market.
It's really, really easy.

The box, THE BOX

"I don't know how to use source, that makes it the shittiest engine to work with."
i want both
It might be cheaper per month but can you pay for the first month then cancel, like with Unreal 4?
Because if you can't, Unreal is still a better deal for most people.
So, feature wise, what's to be compared with this and Unreal 4?
This is great, I'm going to have to try this and UE4 now. It'd be cool if Unity had some response prepared for this.
The box, THE BOX
i sure as heck didn't enjoy working with any part of it during my 6 years with it
Wonder if Unity's gonna do something
They announced Unity 5 yesterday, the license is still $75 per month or $1500 for a permanent pro license, publishing with free is still... free until you make $40,000 within a fiscal year, then you just have to buy pro, no royalties.
when you pick up the letter opener, your arms stretch out to unimaginable lengths and life crashes
And everything else on the table jumps up in the air.
Fuuuuuuuck yes. Cryengine is where it's at.
Creation Engine: 99 cents, and they'll throw in a free promotional letter opener.
Source 2 = 50 cents plus a free copy of Valve's next game.

This so much. Nobody in 2007 really had a rig to run Crysis or the Sandbox2 editor really well so it got swept under the rug and never developed its own community that this guy talks here:

UE4 definitely has it made in the community department, but Cryengine has versatility above all else and I sincerely hope we got a ton of new Cryengine games now.
[editline]19th March 2014[/editline]
But now I'm confused, what will become of Crytek's thing where they give out Cryengine3 for free provided you don't try to turn a profit?
Well then, Glad my project is still early on, I am going to switch to Cryengine from UDK
"I don't know how to use source, that makes it the shittiest engine to work with."
from a licensee's perspective i can tell you it is the shittiest engine to work with, it's out of date, broken, and don't even ask about mac support.
as for udk vs cryengine, to be honest I found CryEngine 3 painful to get to grips with, plus the tutorials and demo resources that UE4 come with just blow every other tutorials for any other engines totally out of the water. plus you just can't beat full source code access.
lol crytek/crydev forum was desperate enough to make people that made garbage youtube tutorials into moderators just to avoid doing docs themselves.
from what i've seen, although this pricing might turn out better than ue4, cryengine has some shitty people in its community
especially some of the forum staff
and ue4 has better tutorials, unless i missed something with my experimentation time in cryengine
the only leg up CE3 had over UDK was in scale (not scalability, just sheer scale) and now UE4 can pretty much do everything Cryengine can.... but better and to a more controllable degree :x
all the cryengines absolutely fall flat on their faces when it comes to subtelty and if CrySDK's support is anything to go by, Crytek doesn't care about the indie community at all
oh! and the super hd textures and shaders capabilities of UE4?

they're no joke, man

UE4 kinda mopped the floor with CryEngine and the fact that they have open source(ish) access as well as blueprint and all those likes, it is really no wonder what every indie developer will be using this generation.
^Mhm. As it's been said UE's got the community while CryEngine's got the price. Either way we'll be getting video games.
