The Aftermath: Google goes dark for 2 minutes, kills 40% of world's net traffic

I didn't notice.
google is the best
haha, get it guys? Cos his name is goooooogle and he likes google, geddit?
This happened as I was looking for worms mods today, ended up using yahoo and assuming it would be back shortly.
I didn't realize how much of an effect it had.
40% of traffic as seen by GoSquared is not 40% of internet traffic.
I mean just look at their 'about us' page

It redirects to yahoo AFAIK.
I was a victim to this... Temporary downfall.
I panicked, because I trying to search for something related to Deadspace 3.
I tried looking around for alternatives, and found bing.
holy fuck that sucked.
I use http://duckduckgo.com personally. I only use google when I am forced to use google services (like with my phone, gmail, etc.)
Imagine the panic in the world. If we're talking all telecomunications, planes would probably crash and fall from the sky. The economy, at least how we know it, would no longer exist. There would be a crimewave across the country because police can't organize themselves with more than shortwave radios.
I'm not sure aircraft systems rely exclusively on the internet for navigational data. In fact I know that there are 3, 4 or 5 redundant system which are always updated and in use in aircraft around the world. GPS navigation is a primary method of navigational data but airplanes have IRS and INS systems that feed positional data to the systems as a backup in case GPS navigational data is unavailable due to weather or technical issues.
Although I understand your concern.
I use Google to see if my internet is still working when its being funky.

harvey looks old :(
I'd like to imagine this is a real thing
It probably is, at least at a datacentre somewhere.
Google is basically an internet monopoly, though what they've done so far is mostly good for us.
And even better for them.
It probably is, at least at a datacentre somewhere.
Nah, if there's a fire you kill everyone inside the server room, if the AC fails you blow on the servers to keep them cool and if there's a Saboteur, you strangle him with some TP cables.
I had actually been thinking about what would happen if Google went offline temporarily. How much it would effect the internet
I'm off the internet for a day and the internet world is apparently freaking out about 2 minutes without Google?
Time to continue going outside off the internet.
I wonder how much of a spike Yahoo and Bing suffered in the outage
I was reduced to using Yahoo to figure out what the hell was going on for a few minutes
I'd rather go without.
I couldn't get onto youtube to watch all my favorite vids! Oh no!
And even better for them.
aside from the pants-shitting-but-slim-chance that google's systems will become autonomous and/or google decides to play NSA, i dont see what's to be disagreed about
if it werent for their development of search engines, the internet's spread would have been a lot slower(and by extension, development of social media and related technologies)
dunno whats so bad about that, FP

novice pilots may not be able to handle non-ILS landing sequences. i know it has caused a fair share of plane crashes in the past from people who have been forced to land non-ILS or simply unwilling to do a go around for an ILS landing

Uhm you aren't allowed to fly a plane without being able to land without it? Most private planes don't even have autopilot.
I sort of wish I could of seen this but it happened at 1am where I live. Would of been a very strange couple of minutes.
So it wasn't just me then...

I didn't freak out over the loss of Google, but it was a grim reminder that anything could go horribly wrong at any moment. Our world depends on the internet for virtually everything, especially for payments. Want to pay for something with a card? You need the internet. Want to get cash from an ATM? You need the internet. Want to just go to a damn bank teller and get cash there? They need the internet too. If anything like this were to happen on a broader, longer scale, it could damage the economy.
Was this why google chrome was going slow for me at 3am-5am in the morning in england?
google is the best
what's up with the disagrees and shit. why do people think google is terrible? don't bother if you're gonna talk about the nsa or spying or dumb shit like that.
Uhm you aren't allowed to fly a plane without being able to land without it? Most private planes don't even have autopilot.
there are literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of cases where both private and public planes have crashed because of an inexperienced pilot

Yes but what you are stating in your original post is completely false. No pilot anywhere in the world is allowed to fly (solo) unless they are able to do visual landings.
I wonder what caused the outage.
