More evidence the media fucking sucks. Oi.
"However, as we got further into the case and each time we looked at the pictures of Gordon, Elizabeth and Libby, we felt like they needed someone to speak for them" SO we! the completely un-involved reporters decided we'd be their voice 30 years later when absolutely no one knew or gave a shit about his past. The media is a fucking joke sometimes [editline]2nd August 2013[/editline]
also i noticed a flaw in the article. it says he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but up until 1980 psychological diagnoses were made with either the DSM-I or DSM-II. These did not contain schizophrenia at all, but rather just psychoses. according to the time frame of the article he was diagnosed in the 60's or 70's, meaning this is what he was actually given. it's more interesting because back then the definitions of disorders were not scientifically or empirically based, but just based on the wisdom of a small number of psychiatrists that worked for the DSM task force. just something i noticed
I'd imagine the article used the updated diagnosis to match what he would have being diagnosed with today.
and then there's all the stupid people jumping the gun and saying "he's a monster and should be locked up forEVER!!!!!!!!!!" pls just die for the good of mankind
This is my only issue with the first amendment. It can be used to ruin people's lives. And the government is trying to stop that, but news corporations spin it to hell and back to convince people that it's for the worse.
The guy is a monster no doubt, but he's trying to atone for it, at least. As nervous as it might make people to be in a room with someone who committed three murders, if it isn't relevant anymore there is no need to spread the knowledge of it around.
The world is an extremely fucked up place when you can kill an entire family and walk away because you're mentally FUBAR. I am not saying that punishments should be dealt or anything like that by any means at all, I'm just saying. That, is seriously fucked up.
How about the professor sue the news media for libel or slander. This is an invasion of privacy. Even ex-con needs a protection of privacy
How about the professor sue the news media for libel or slander. This is an invasion of privacy. Even ex-con needs a protection of privacy
libel and slander require the allegations to be untrue.

“However, as we got further into the case and each time we looked at the pictures of Gordon, Elizabeth and Libby, we felt like they needed someone to speak for them. Dr. St. James has had a lifetime to speak for himself, but who would speak for them if we remained silent?” Someone already spoke for them. The prosecution. Said speaking-for-the-dead-ness got the guy to an institution where he was rehabilitated and declared legally sane after 6 years of professional help. Justice had been served. For once the Justice System actually did what it was supposed to, and worked. There was literally no reason why you cunts should have interfered in his life. Now everyone in the world is going to view him as a monster instead of as a rehabilitated man trying to atone for his past as well as a man dedicated to helping people in his position avoid the same kind of mistakes he made. His life is now probably going to be ruined, and it's all your fault.
i honestly think the journalist should face some kind of repercussion, you shouldn't be able to ruin peoples lives like that
I think they should be allowed to reveal the truth. I'm not sure about how it will affect his life but I doubt it will destroy his life considering where he is.

That, is seriously fucked up.
One problem with that, he didn't exactly walk away scot-free. He got arrested, tried in court, and declared insane by a judge. He then spent 6 years getting psychiatric counseling, and managed to regain his sanity. After being released, he moved on to get a degree and pursue a career in psychiatry, helping others like him to avoid his mistakes. He didn't get off without a hitch, he got properly sentenced, treated, and cured (or at least mostly relieved) of his mental illness. That's hardly walking away with no repercussions. He even chose to take the same path in life that the people who helped him heal did, and to help others like himself as what could be reasonably assumed to be atonement for his crimes. You don't immediately work to become a better person and prevent others from making your mistakes if you're blissfully unaware/uncaring of said mistakes.
cunt reporter the family was spoken for when.the man was tried and rehabilitated. this is just cruel, and i hope he remains in his position despite these reporters trying to fuck up his life for the sake of sensationalism [editline]2nd August 2013[/editline] when you hound a man for something deep in the past that he has paid and is still paying for, in some attempt to oust him from the very job he uses to atone for his actions, you're the real monster here
I'd imagine the article used the updated diagnosis to match what he would have being diagnosed with today.
well either it's an indirect translation (psychoses was a broad term, paranoid schizophrenia is a specific one) or it's flawed, i just found it interesting because i was doing psych homework while reading this and it directly related but either way he might be given a different diagnosis now as psychology has advanced a lot in the last 40 years for defining mental disorders. literally when he was diagnosed there was about 3 sentences per category and none of it was empirically supported, just a mutually agreed idea by esteemed psychologists
How about the professor sue the news media for libel or slander. This is an invasion of privacy. Even ex-con needs a protection of privacy
Because it's not libel or slander. It's a fact.
another example how there's still many people that confuse justice with savagery- and to think all the Zimmerman riots just blew over
I think you mean this one
earlyriser54 Report Abuse earlyriser54 - 2 hours ago Only a liberal would find nothing wrong with this scenario. Have you ever heard of the work FRAUD? This man perpetrated one of the greatest cases of FRAUD on hundreds of people. He slipped through the cracks of the correctional system and this literally is a case of the inmates being in charge of the asylum. He had to have lied in order to secure employment and I know LYING to a liberal is not a crime as long as the liberals are doing the lying but this story is earth shattering. How would you like to be the parent of a Millikin graduate knowing you paid all that money and your student was taught by a lying, fraudalent, CONVICTED MURDERER? Personally I would have a HUGE problem with that.

What a fucking retard. That's how it's supposed to work. The only western nation where it doesn't is the one that this redneck asshick is running his mouth from. Fuck him and his ilk. No clue about the world and no room for anyone but himself.

It's not prison, but you're certainly a prisoner. It is by no means "walking away" from it. I spent five days in a mental hospital before, and six years in an institution does not sound fun.

He spent several years in jail, cleared the psychiatric exams after his term, and was released.
