I really want to buy one of those very durable mp3 players like the one posted here. I go camping a lot, and I don't usually like to take an iphone or ipod simply because to replace it would cost me an arm and a leg at the moment.
I searched ebay but didn't find much.
You should get a second hand iPod Classic of sorts. They can be found for not a lot of money, and are very easy to repair/spare parts are easy to find. They're harddrive based, so maybe not the most durable against dropping, though. But there's no touch screen to break, and it's not as tempting to steal as an iOS device.
i think i will wait for a price drop but 128gb plus good audio hardware in a portable package is literally all i have ever wanted from an mp3 player

amazing
So when should I expect 4K Audio?
Source article shows a paywall
like an ipod?
should have clarified. if i don't need an amp to drive my headphones with this then it would be perfect. would explain the price too if it had an amp or equivalent hardware built in

This tank survived a washing machine twice but it only had 8GBs on it so I had to switch to this:

The Sansa outlived 8 pairs of headphones and the iPod is currently outliving 3.
Thing is... high resolution audio can't be appreciated on public transport so there's no point tbh.
Unless you're on holiday or something and want some portable quality, I'm just doubtful you'll need all that bass when you're out and about.
Yeah, had the same problem with my WP8.
That's why I moved to Android. It's not perfect for audio, but the fact that there are many music players to choose from makes it awesome.
Many music player options are great and they usually have different ui too
I used to use poweramp a lot but when I got a new phone (Nexus 5) I kinda stopped using poweramp and switched to Google music because of all access.
If I could have a simple, highly durable, highly reliable MP3 player that'd last 20 years put in the case of an old Walkman I'd be all over it. And given how ridiculously good we are as a society at miniaturization that huge-ass case could hold a battery with enough power to start my damn lawnmower, so hello 5 days straight of listening between charges. Could even be super clever and hide the touchscreen beneath the cassette door!
Sadly they're not doing that, it's just another "Oh this isn't a smartphone it's an mp3 player" package. Oh well. Still, good on 'em and I hope they kick the iPod off the top spot.
I legitimately adore the idea of having modern technology travel in the parallel direction of "bulky but with ludicrous storage/battery capacities/indestructible" more.
It may not fit in your pocket as comfortably, but it has delicious industrial heaviness, can be used to deflect bullets and hammer in nails, lasts for a fucking month on a single charge, and is basically a 500 GB hardrive tank with a screen, why the crap not?
Whoever says 320kbps MP3 isn't enough for them and then wears Beats or any other portable headphones is laughable.
Everyone knows that 320kbps MP3 is fine (Hell, 96kbps Opus is fine for portable listening) but the issue is that most people with physical CD collections will rip them in flac for archival purposes and it's annoying having to convert your entire music collection for your devices to support them.
Flac support is easy to implement and storage space is cheap so there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to just carry a copy of our music collection in our pocket without having to re-encode.
(Hell, 96kbps Opus is fine for portable listening)
god no, maybe audiobooks but it's very clearly trash sounding below 160kbps on the shittiest of players.
As of recent I've drawn away from portable audio though, got sick of hearing noise while listening to music.
I hate the recent trend of touchscreens on mp3 players. I just want to be able to control the damn thing without turning a screen on. What's the point of a dedicated device that doesn't work any better than my phone?
I'm sticking with my 2nd gen ipod nano forever.

Cowon D2
Used this trooper for years, it's an excellent piece of kit

for me portable high resolution audio is good for around the house listening so i don't have to be tethered to my computer if i want to listen to it. much more comfortable listening on my couch than in my computer chair

What he's saying is that with all the other background noise and an average pair of headphones, you won't be able to tell the difference.

i know that. it would be pointless when out and about in public, but if i could have something to use at home which gives me the fidelity of listening on my computer without needing to actually be at my computer, it would be perfect.
I may have been living under a rock but I've never actually heard of FLAC until today?
Aahh.. The good old days where i had 5 different MP3 players laying around because i keep losing one and finding them the next day.

I got a new 160gb Ipod today as a birthday present which just replaced my 80gb one which I've had for 7 years. Only this year did half the clickwheel's buttons stop working and the headphone jack got messed up, and I've dropped it so many times over.
i highly doubt this will be that great at $700, someone should just make a barebones mp3 player w/ a good DAC that will take an mSata SSD so you can get however much storage you want for cheap
i'm betting the people who buy this will be the bose crowd, while it's pretty good, it's definitely overpriced.
Just get a Sansa (clip zip or fuze+ if you can stand it) and ram a 128gb microsd card in it. Works best for the cheapskates of us.
Besides that, Sansa really needs some new player lineup.
I just want a reliable 50€ music player that doesn't rely on some crap PC software when transferring music.
Sansa Clip Zip
I'd love a personal music player + gps both embeded into my car
now if only it had a GODDAM AUXILIARY PORT
the CD button says "CD / AUX" but there isn't an aux
its a pontiac
I just want a reliable 50€ music player that doesn't rely on some crap PC software when transferring music.
Pure function, no room for fancy pants design language. It was designed to be used and not necessarily to be seen which is why I think they look so good now.
On a side note, the only problem I have with individual sound devices (like iPods and the like) is that I tend to miss a lot of phone calls because of it, which is why I use my phone now. Anyone found a way around this which isn't turn the volume down or set the vibrate mode to "blow your cock off when the phone rings"?
All good design is made to look and function. It's just that this kind of industrial design language has sadly become a bit rare.
Speaking of design, for a 700$ (edit: actually 698.99 Euros, or 951 USD) dedicated music player, I want the android interface to be completely fucking gone. Not because android is bad, it just feels off.
like this thing just looks amazing, hardware wise

it's industrial, I like it (except for the leather back, but I'll leave that as personal preference) but I would definitely expect a dedicated interface, perhaps optimized for one hand use like Sailfish OS is.

I also like being able to skip tracks without looking at the screen, something I can't do on my phone.
Wasn't the entire purpose of the Walkman to be a cheap, replacable, simple, and somewhat durable music player? This isn't even close to the same niche the Walkman filled.
WalkBusinessExec would be a better name.
I kind of want one of these when travelling so if I get robbed, it isn't something super important like a phone.
I kind of want one of these when travelling so if I get robbed, it isn't something super important like a phone.
Yeah it's only twice as expensive as one.
Call me a hipster but I kinda miss the old blocky designs. I would probably get fed up with their clunkiness but I just like that, how should I say, "technology" kind of look. Nowadays everything has to be flat and glossy.
something about that thing is sexy as fuck
like, I want to get one and one of those car-cassette adapter things and just plug my phone into it just so I can use it.
