Yeah it's only twice as expensive as one.
I mean with a cheaper version but even then, losing a music player is probably less annoying than losing a phone.

And with the same money you could replace your phone twice, or own three.
I hate the recent trend of touchscreens on mp3 players. I just want to be able to control the damn thing without turning a screen on. What's the point of a dedicated device that doesn't work any better than my phone?
I'm sticking with my 2nd gen ipod nano forever.
Remotes need to come back into fashion.

if it doesn't have a card reader and doesn't play flac, then fuck that shit
i think i will wait for a price drop but 128gb plus good audio hardware in a portable package is literally all i have ever wanted from an mp3 player
$350 currently, 2 microSD slots (256GB max capacity right now, but it'll continue to support higher capacity cards as they come out), pretty good sound quality, nicely portable. I've got one and it works great with my ATH-M50 and FLACs.

once i get some money i might put it down for this. just did a bit of external research and it seems the internal amps are indeed powerful enough for my dt 770s which is exactly what i want. thank you!
My HTC One has done amazingly for the past year or so. I guess the drawback is that once it dies you have no music OR phone.

Call me a hipster but I kinda miss the old blocky designs. I would probably get fed up with their clunkiness but I just like that, how should I say, "technology" kind of look. Nowadays everything has to be flat and glossy.
I was reading a very interesting article about product design over the past decade today. It focused on the trend toward glossier, smoother, less-detailed products. Apparently, the movement was spawned from the shift toward the advancing digital nature of consumer electronics. Product designers want to make the designs look like they are themselves digital, to reflect the underlying ideas of the software they run.
It comes from Dieter Rams' philosophy that the design of a product should be driven by its function, but beautified by its aesthetic. Essentially, that the form and function should be equal, entwined parts of a consumer product. However, it very sharply diverges because, unlike a record player, the interactive portion is entirely digital, and doesn't lend itself well to being accented by physical design.
So you see this trend away from big, blocky, physically-based products to things which more closely reflect the digital nature of their interactive components.
It doesn't hurt that we have advanced computerized prototyping techniques now, which make it easier to turn a consumer device into a piece of modern sculpture. If you had tried to do that in the 80s, you would have had to hire a team of artists to sculpt the thing out of clay or resin, which is difficult and expensive.
There was more as well, like skeuomorphism (the anchoring of a digital product in reality through precise applications of material to create the illusion of an organic appearance), branding, all sorts of things.

They are, to a point. Everyone's started integrating them into the headphones themselves, which is really smart for a number of reasons. They no longer look like your headphones have eaten a small pig, but are instead merged into the application of headphones as themselves.
clip+ is still the best
All good design is made to look and function. It's just that this kind of industrial design language has sadly become a bit rare.
Speaking of design, for a 700$ (edit: actually 698.99 Euros, or 951 USD) dedicated music player, I want the android interface to be completely fucking gone. Not because android is bad, it just feels off.
like this thing just looks amazing, hardware wise

it's industrial, I like it (except for the leather back, but I'll leave that as personal preference) but I would definitely expect a dedicated interface, perhaps optimized for one hand use like Sailfish OS is.
That leather back is a bit weird. It almost looks like they're trying to replicate an old camera rather than the Walkman line. I've got a Minolta with the same leatherette and aluminum combination.
I thought from the title they were making a new tape player and got excited because I really need a new portable cassette player.
A new mobile cassette player would be great. For those of you that don't know, a lot of small-label bands release on cassette, as its very cheap to produce.
i always thought the name walkman had a nice ring to it
It has a heavy, bulky body that houses 128 gigabytes of storage for ultra-high-quality music files.
This is what I've repeatedly said Apple should have done; combine the iPod Touch with the capacity of the iPod Classic so you've got the best of both worlds. Regardless of having to make it bulkier.
I'm still using my 3rd Gen iPod Touch for music to save storage on my iPhone, but now I'm considering upgrading it to an iPod Classic just because 32gb isn't enough anymore, and with how expensive data is on mobile carriers, streaming is out of the question if I'm not on WiFi.
I've used several expensive devices with touch screens and stuff but then I bought a Sansa Clip+ with a 64 GB SD and it's the best player I've ever had. It just works, rather than being a fancy but slow and buggy piece of shit.
my friend had an old ARCHOS and i had a 8gb sony walkman back in 2008, we'd always fight over which one was better
the archos was because it had a touchscreen

but my sony is still kicking, although the volume rocker is broken beyond repair

It's shit like this that makes me kinda wish some devices stayed without touchscreens. I hate, hate the lack of tactile feel on a touchscreen vs actual button pressings. It now takes me fucking forever to type out text messages compared to the old phones where I used to have the tactile feel of pressing buttons to move quickly.
I love my iPod video but it's really showing its age, and also it's HDD makes weird noises
I'd love to get my hands on something like a new era walkman
I expected a 2014 cassette and CD player.

My music player (zPlayer) allows me to pause or skip a song when I press the send/end button on my earphones.
