It's pretty much just the chiptune equivalent of singing.
I like VOCALOID not for the culture that surrounds it but because its flexibility over an actual singer facilitates certain creative artists and music styles that you don't get much of anywhere else (such as Sasakure.UK) and ease of use acts as a decent substitute in the song otherwise (40mP, kz, OSTER project) because the composer has total control over it.
Even Jake Kaufman / virt tried it out in [I]Lorem Ipsum[/I] and it sounded okay.

My avatar and in both the video I posted and the one I quoted. And there was a hologram of her some time last year i believe it was at some convention in Japan. I'm having trouble finding an image of it though.
never will understand vocaloid, but I guess it's mostly harmless. The picture of the 'extreme' fan up there is just that, an [I]extreme[/I] that doesn't represent the fanbase as a whole. Most of them are about as harmless as the average weaboo.

I'm seeing this tour later in the year when an actual performer is opening for it. I'm both happy and sad that I'm not gonna get/have to see Hatsune Miku. I'm not sure if I'd love or hate it.
I'm not quite sure how Hatsune Miku will go over with the typical Lady Gaga fanbase which is probably going to be confused at best. I hope there's going to be a shitstorm just for the funny twitter reactions.

I thought Hatsune Miku/Vocaloid was some japanese video game about music. I didn't know people actually sat and listened to this as real music, wow.

I'm glad all music made with the program can be classified as "anime uguu kawaii music" even though vocaloid is just the means to an end.
