Yeah, the Europeans should totally have refused to fund expeditions to the New World, because they had hungry people to help.
It's not like we don't have the resources to do both, as both are vitally important.
Why the fuck should we give NASA billions of dollers for something that wont be done for another 10 years or more? America dug them selfs into a deep deep shit hole. That money should be going to help rebuilding America's Economy. Plus America isn't the only resource of getting to the moon or anywhere else in space. Fuck NASA they been lying about everything they do and find for 50 years.

New continents =/= new planets.
Terrible analogy try again later
Obama is getting worse and worse. I hope that fucker does something that forces us to impeach him.
Because the next guy in office will be better.
Because the next guy in office will be better.
Sarah Palin might get in.

It's just a greater distance.
You're very closed minded.

New worlds full of valuable resources that require expensive, arduous journeys lasting months if not years and pushing the limits of technology and endurance?
Yeah, it is a valid analogy. Except there aren't any Martians to commit genocide against.
It's just too much input for so little output. Sure, it might be beneficial in the future if we discover a magical fairyland of paradise underneath the surface of another planet, but it doesn't really matter now, because we have problems we have to face TODAY. You seriously can't just say "fuck everything, let's go to Mars."
sloppy it is ridiculously more expensive to send and maintain a colony on another planet then on another continent on the same planet. do you really not realize that?
It's just a greater distance.

A greater distance which is harder to get to?
We don't really have the fucking technology to get to moon.
War does that too.
Space travel is a bit more productive than war.
That is redundant. We have plenty of reasons to develop new technologies.
End starvation.
End disease.
Uplift third world nations.
Make technology more accessible.
If there is such a shortage of practical applications that you need to bullshit yourself into an excuse to make something, it isn't worth making.
And we are doing these things. But the great thing about humanity is that we're good at splitting up into groups and working on multiple things simultaneously.
Both of us obviously have different priorities, and we're not going to convince each other to give up this argument. I guess for each other's sake, it's a good thing we're not responsible for funding decisions.

Because it's for the future.
Eventually we will need to go into space, if we continue to spend money on things here on Earth, we'll never get there.
The US military budget is over 680 billion dollars, NASA's is just under 18 billion.
So spending about 40x the amount of money on killing people instead of moving into "the final frontier" makes sense?
sloppy it is ridiculously more expensive to send and maintain a colony on another planet then on another continent on the same planet. do you really not realize that?
But it's something that must eventually happen.
NASA has been trying new low-cost low-storage fuel, which should make the whole process cheaper.
hurr hurr hurr "obama obama"
Space travel is a bit more productive than war.
It's much more expensive in the money department and there's always a chance you could fuck up somewhere on some minuscule detail and loose everything.
Yet with War, at least one faction gets a lot of money after the war, which can then be used to boost their economy, and in turn boost everyone Else's economy, which makes people generally more happy unless they are cynical hermits.
People are more productive when they are happier, so you might get more of a benefit out of technology from war that space travel.

Again, the "fuck Earth, let's go to Mars" attitude. Okay, let's just leave America defenseless against the hordes of enemies they have made while we slowly try to figure out a way to get out of here.

Spending money stimulates the economy. No matter how you spend it.

Fine.
We'll fight wars in space.
Happy now?

With the small side effect of killing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people.

I'm not saying you should touch the budgets, just why would you cut NASA's budget when it costs way less than the US army?
Attempting to launch a Moon Landing Mission at this time is like trying to buy a BMW x6 with only 10,000 USD to put on the table
We don't really have the fucking technology to get to moon.
:what:
Last time I checked, WE DO. Unless the Apollo missions were all a mass hallucination, we've had the tech to reach the moon for a good forty years now.
I'm not saying you should touch the budgets, just why would you cut NASA's budget when it costs way less than the US army?
Their net budget is actually being raised, the Constellation program is what got cut.
Because it's for the future.
It's not for the future, it's for your future. You want to go live in space, that's why you want it done now. We all know that eventually it's bound to happen, but you are being self-centered in the fact that you do not care about other people's problems, only your own fantasies.
With the small side effect of killing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people.
Which gets rid of the over population problem.

And the europeans made sure there was a way to bring shit back before they went there
they also made sure colonies could be self-sustaining before they set any up

So you are saying cut the army's budget? We have to cut something you know, it's better that we cut something that probably won't benefit us for decades.
Fine.

Technology would need to improve.
Reading some of the comments, the US is not the only country with the abilities to space travel, wait for one of them to go to Mars, and explore the Universe, and when Obama finds that the Earth is pathetic, there can be high hopes for space travel.
Space travel is a bit more productive than war.

Then why don't Europeans do a European Space Project then? If we're so good at Colonising.
