Going into space would be more of a permanent solution.
There is limited surface area on Earth, so eventually, even if we made every bit of it inhabitable, you wouldn't be able to fit everyone.

As I already said, the new world was fertile, much easier to get to, and the europeans had the ability to ship things back and forth and make entirely self-sustaining colonies.
There is a difference between setting things up on a different continent, with established sources of water, food, lumber and trade, and going to a different planet with absolutely nothing of value.

I advocate scientific progress that can actually be used to do something useful.
There is nothing inherently scientific about space, it's just the fact that we know so little about it (because we don't need to know goddamn much at all about it) that makes it seem scientific.
