The software heist of the century, or a modern art masterpiece?
So meatspin is an art?
Meatspin is absolutely art.
It touches upon so many things it's amazing - the non-physical transfer of an event, the way this image has been disseminated to millions, the kind of cultural shift that meant people would intentionally transmit such an image to each other, the quasi-comedic portrayal of something that only decades ago would have been seen almost universally as utterly disgusting and morally reprehensible.
And that's just scratching the most superficial of surfaces. It's kind of amazing.

Art is such a bullshit business.
Getting people to pay exorbitant amounts for art is fucking bullshit.

Meatspin has less artistic merit than goatse though, at least to me. The goat man portrays the ultimate introspection - the ability to truly see inside one's own soul.
How did you access that image? How did that image make you feel? What is this image and your reactions and everything involved in it mean for the world? What ramifications does it have?

The idea that things have artistic merit, or that a quality of merit can be applied to art is a bit stupid.
the point of defining something as "art" isn't about the level of quality or technical skill of the work, it's only to convey that something functions as art
where were you when everyone on FP was bitching about 4′33″
Guys, just a thought here, How can it be illegal if you can't access it? How do you know it actually has files on it if it's not plugged into anything?

Does software exist (in the sense that it is what we conceive of as software) without being able to access it?

Here is a picture of spongebob farting bubbles. This piece of interesting because it makes the viewer think about the consumer culture, represented by spongebob, and it's waste represented by the secretion. The fact that spongebob is secreting bubbles instead of shit represents people's refusal to accept the truth.
Actually I made that all up it is a picture of spongebob farting bubbles.

Personally, I love it. The concept of having so much value in something so small and innocuous really makes a huge statement about today's world, and how we have progressed from a more material to a more conceptual world.

You expect any of us to have been alive in 1952?
Holy shit what the fuck Rick Ross.
Holy shit what the fuck Rick Ross.
You clearly don't understand modern art and the deep meanings behind the picture.
My name is Rick Ross and if I don't think it's art, it's not.

If it isn't a reflection of the human condition or doesn't makes you empathize with the artist's vision for happiness then it isn't art.

Interesting. Looks like a dadaist piece of art to me, since they put it that way...
So is it cool to go up to the exhibit and plug it in and copy the data over? If it is then this is the best art I've ever witnessed.
It's almost like Dada art. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fountain_(Duchamp)
People who know nothing about art calling pieces of art shit are one of the worse kinds of people. Art isn't about painting a pretty landscape. Art is a way for an artist to express their feelings/opinions in a sensual way. The point is to get you to think.
And when the biggest question is not the actual artist's intention but, "How is this art?" you screwed up somewhere because it's the artist's job to make sure that their point/intention is thoroughly and easily attainable.

no
I suppose it could be considered "art." The hard drive stands defiantly on its pedestal for the whole world to see, knowing that its stolen contents are worth more than their home, car, and 401k combined.
Its very presence sends a bold message of freedom to corrupt industries who control the flow of information and ideas through money, and forces people to question the true value of entertainment (video games - $476,000), knowledge ($3 million dollar novel collection and a $500,000 collection of textbooks), and the digital tools that are now the de facto way of creating and developing ($25,200 Adobe products, $$7,200 AutoCAD products).
[/artcritic]
Certainly is NEAT, but by no means art.

You're so ugly you could be a modern art masterpiece!
Kick a man in the shin and he'll complain for a moment. Show a man a piece of modern art and he'll complain for a week.
This says nothing to me, thus for me it is not art.
This is a very interesting concept once you think about it.
Thought the idea can be done by anyone.
Though it isn't done by anyone, which is why it stands out.
Isn't it like that with all art? If it's unique, it gets attention.
That's how I 'judge' art basically, is it unique or not?
