The software heist of the century, or a modern art masterpiece?
Though it isn't done by anyone, which is why it stands out.
Isn't it like that with all art? If it's unique, it gets attention.
That's how I 'judge' art basically, is it unique or not?
Not everyone has the audacity to bullshit a harddrive into an art museum.

Perhaps you should pursue an education, then you might understand the world beyond your own (clearly) limited life experience. I've read several meaningful interpretations in this thread and you are so inexcusably ignorant that you are still hung up on the fact that it is a hard drive. If you had any ability to think abstractly you would be able to see some meaning in the piece, but you clearly do not.
My advice - At least finish high school before you pass judgement on anything in the real world. Gain some life experience and you might be able to derive abstract meaning rather than thinking that art is about pretty portraits and landscapes.
What's the point in calling something "art" if "art" can be anything?
This is why I hate modern art, it makes "art" a useless definition that can be used on absolutely everything.
This is why I hate people that don't understand modern art. They think it's just poorly drawn, or something that's not even art.

This is why I hate people that think their view on art is overarching and correct. They don't think it's art, I don't think it's art because it says nothing to me, you think it is art, so what? Why argue about it.

It's art by definition.
The meaning behind this piece is extremely obvious.
How about this
It is art
I think it's shitty art and don't appreciate it at all.
no
Actually yes, its the artist's job to make sure that whatever message they're trying to portray is easily obtained. When most pieces of modern art only bring up, "How is this Art?" then what is the point of their existence.
And when the biggest question is not the actual artist's intention but, "How is this art?" you screwed up somewhere because it's the artist's job to make sure that their point/intention is thoroughly and easily attainable.
Perhaps if you are making pop music yes
In your eyes Justin Beiber is a better artist than, let's say Bjork because that will get spain in here

Because through deep abstract thought one can ascertain the true meaning and artist's intention. No one says that art has to be able interpreted by a three year old, or Rick Ross. Just because you cannot reach the line of thinking that the artist had when creating the piece does not mean it is suddenly not art. All art is essentially is emotion or thought manifested physically. If any intention, belief, or emotional expression went into it's creation, it is art.

no not at all. an artist doesnt even need a message. an artist just needs to create something that other people want to experience with one of their senses. a message is great, but its about desirability.
for example the mona lisa is unappealing to me, i think its an overrated piece of trash. but other people love it, so its art.

No he's not, Bjork is an amazing artirst.
I never said a piece couldn't have more than one point/intention, it just needs one that the artist makes painfully obvious.

Holy shit, I'm not saying this isn't art! I'm saying this artist in particular, didn't think it through most likely.
I'm basically saying its a shit piece of work.

If art is obvious it's derivative and uninspired most of the time
you sound like a boring person who just takes everything at face value, and if you can't find face value you get scared and dismiss it as crap

Ding ding ding ding :v:
I know, what I did was annoying and arbitrary but I wanted to lead you all like a mouse to cheese.

most artists probably didnt "think it through"
i bet if you asked most artists how they came up with certain pieces of art they would have just said "oh i thought it looked cool". most art doesnt have a strong meaning, but it invokes meaning in the people who see it.

Then they get really damn lucky or are lazy....
And I also doubt that because my professors in art would disagree with you whole heartily.
Has anyone tried to open the PDF? It crashes my browser and Adobe Reader.

have fun
so much subjective "this is shit not art and my opinion is right" it hurts
it may not be conventional "art" but IMO it says a lot about technology nowadays. I always thought art had some kind of a message, no?
Thought the idea can be done by anyone.
holy fuck you must be some kind of genius

Man, that single block of black filled with information that I couldn't care less about is deeeeeeep.
Freakin' modern art, man.

funny how people like you will spew childish trash like this and then turn around and argue that video games are art

Right. And, once again, you feel a need to generalize, and rate me dumb.
Man, you sure are feeling innovative today, aren't you?

it's true
all the Mona Lisa is is a rectangle if you want to go down that road
it's true
all the Mona Lisa is is a rectangle if you want to go down that road
I never said I defined the Mona Lisa as art. Hell, I don't even know what I define as art. But a black box sure ain't it.
Edit:
And I've been rated dumb again. Gee, I wonder who it was...
I never said I defined the Mona Lisa as art. Hell, I don't even know what I define as art. But a black box sure ain't it.
so now you're saying you're the end-all be-all authority on what is art?
pschhhhhhhhh
if you don't know what your idea of "art" is please don't classify what is and what isn't

nah he was just saying "it's the artist's job to make sure that their point/intention is thoroughly and easily attainable."
so now he can listen to throbbing gristle and find out what their point/intention was
So it's a hard drive that the artist didn't make, containing files the artist didn't create. Bravo.
