I remember that sometimes my dial-up connection would top 7kb/s and i was like: "Oh yeah bitch!!!! Only 1 hour to download this 10mb fucker"
The dial-up sound freaked me out as a kid. It still gives me chills.
This makes me feel so old...
It's not like you can't have two modems of your own and fuck around with them with your own tiny networks, just for kicks.
Modems can't be directly connected to eachother. At the very least you need a line simulator. At least we still have bulletin boards. You can still find ones to dial into but most don't have a number anymore. "HONEY GET OFF THE INTERNET, MOM NEEDS TO USE THE PHONE!"
I remember putting a pillow over my PC when I was connecting to the internet at night so my parents wont hear me.
I thought the sound came through the computer speakers so I decided to be a genius and turn them off while connecting Got fucking caught
Remember back when thread titles would have "image heavy 56k warning" on them?
i seem to remember some people in 07 and 08 that made this a joke in gd

"hey jeff's phone isnt ringing when i call him, I guess he is using the internet right now"
I can dial my friend in washington and use his network as a dial-up connection. What I'd love to get my hands on is an acoustic coupler modem...

I don't know if it's just XP or if Windows 7 also has the telnet command. Another way to connect to BBSes. There's that Star Wars in ASCII that you can dial/telnet up to.
I miss the days of "NO NO NO DON'T PICK UP THE RINGING PHON-" *Internet Disconnected.*

I used dial-up internet to connect TRS-80's when I was a kid and I was born in 1991.
In my opinion, dial-up will always live on as 3G coverage. Piece of shit's actually slower than 56k.
I remember this commercial, already moved on from dialup at that point though
Just think, there are kids today that never used dial up.
Just think, there are kids today that never used dial up.
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
Just think, there are kids today that never used dial up.
Lucky fuckers
My local hospital still uses dial up. Maybe now they'll have some friggin' Wifi installed

I remember when Broadband internet arrived on the scene and being amazed at how fast it was compared to Dial-Up but it doesn't seem to last as It seems to be a trend regarding speeds that what seems amazing quick at first over the years starts to feel increasingly slow. The first damage done to non-fibre broadband was when stuff like Youtube arrived on the scene and before we know it the whole thing feels like it's gone down to a crawl.

Then ADSL took over with 128k and the two kept besting eachother.
whole thing feels like it's gone down to a crawl.
I blame that more on shitty web programming.
Literally almost all my friends are still on dial-up. I have high speed, but it's just BARELY a step above dial-up speeds. It's a lot more common than you might think. A lot of us just don't have the option for high-speed.
This. I recently moved away from my hometown for college, but my hometown is way down in southern Arkansas. The most you can get around there is dialup(CenturyTel/CenturyLink) or shitty DSL that had the same speed. God, back in the 2d Runescape days, there was a good 10 second delay from your action to the actual game.

AT&T claimed that we were going to get high speed around christmas time in..I guess 2006. ....Where's my goddamned high speed internet? I mean, 0.268 MB/s is better than the 2.5 kb/s dialup offers, but shit. I'd love to download at 1MB/s.
Just think, there are kids today that never used dial up.
I'm 19 and never used dial up I think that's about old enough to have had to have dealt with it once.
