It doesn't make it particularly nice to say, but expressing distaste for a group with voluntary admission and is based around a set of ideas has virtually nothing in common with expressing distaste for people based on the color of their skin. Any religious factions are identical to every other group out there. It would be ridiculous to call hating Democrats or Republicans racist. Likewise it would be ridiculous to call hating the KKK or the TSA racist. This is exactly what is being done though. Hating people because of their belief system is, as far as reasons to hate go, fairly valid and is worlds apart from hating folks based on sexual orientation or the color of their skin.
