I heard about this plan a few months (years?) ago, I didn't think it would ever take off. Its really impressive they managed to do it themselves. I love how DIY it appears in the video.
This thread is now bitching about your shitty internet, or boasting about your awesome/cheap internet.
Not bad seeing as its the same package that was 512kbs a decade ago.
(And its going to 120..)

This is on BT infinity, props to these guys because we're paying out a fair amount for this shit speed. I got speeds 3 times as quick in my old house which was copperwire and cheaper.
but that test is only with a server right next to the town, so it would only have a fiber connection between them, i wonder how it fares when they actually try to use the internet
reminds me of this old article
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/22/time-warner-and-embarq-cant-compete-with-city-owned-isp-trying/
they couldnt compete with the local ISP so they tried to forcibly shut it down

are you in the ocean?
Is that strange that a small town gets fiber?
I live in a very small town with only 500 inhabitants and we are soon getting fiber, that's how it is with the rest of Sweden too. Bigger towns with maybe a thousand inhabitants have had fiber for a long time already.
The service is crap here in the UK (in comparison to other EU countries) because of the BT monopoly. Thank goodness the monopoly is fading now, and the UK is starting to catch up.
Only have to pay for 30mbs Virgin media doubled it for free so I am happy with what I get.

Paying about 40 a month for HD TV, Telephone and Internet.
Fuck that, I pay €50,- and I still won't get that high. Ziggo... Sigh.

Well of course it is, but atleast in the US, nearly all major ISP interconnections are on new fiber systems. Only the stuff from the local nodes to the houses are still on coaxial or standard copper lines. I'd imagine UK is similar.
why would anyone want to steal fiber that has little to no resale value?
They might not know that. Plenty of times over here people break into houses and steal worthless items that the home owners cherish. Fiber itself isn't expensive outside of it being in a non broken state... as you know, they probably won't.

Small towns are less developed, and have more room to dig, thus cheaper installs.
here we go again
welcome to the "post your speedtest results for more e-penis" thread
Given how important internet services are now it's insane that you have to pay so much for so little in so many places.
Would be a very good business model for smaller public companies like this to go around and pull the rug out form under these larger companies that normally provide terrible service for high premiums to people who have no other alternative.
Live north of Cardiff in rural Wales. Internet is dog bollocks and we pay quite a lot per month.

Pay $54 a month(no contract and just internet alone).

My cost details
$8 month for modem.
$5 month for wire maintenance.
$41 for actual internet service.
$90 for 20Mbit. Not so bad but a bit expensive.
You have to remember that this is a DIY project that people did.
Is people boasting about their internet speed unavoidable in every thread that mentions internet or what?
