Afghanistan wasn't even directly involved in the hijackings, it was done by Emirates, Egyptians and Saudi Arabians.

A land, sea, and air offensive would have led to possible the bloodiest battle ever fought in the history of mankind. Remember Iwo Jima? On this spit of rock 20,000 Japanese soldiers fought 70,000 Americans. Americans killed 18,000. Japan killed almost 7000 and wounding 20,000. An all out offensive against such a strong and suicidal army would have been horrible. Horrible for both sides.

Bin Laden's criticism of Arab states is not uncommon nor is it the first time he has done that. Osama and Al-Qaeda, as well as other similar groups, have usually been against the Arab regimes for their lack of cooperation and solidarity with other Muslims, and for working with US interests in the region. Osama Bin Laden himself was tossed out of Saudi Arabia for becoming critical of Saudi Arabia working with the United States. Most of the higher ups in Al-Qaeda have similar stories of being involved in similar groups in their home countries, mainly Egypt and Jordan, some of which were involved in underground groups to try and overthrow their governments.
