even if this rumor is a crock of shit, it gets me thinking. Valve doing an open world shooter+RPG thing could work. Couldn't see it working with the Half-Life series though.

I'd like to see another city or another country; what's happening in Britain? New Zealand? Dubai? Tokyo? How's Venice looking now that the ocean levels have fallen sharply?
I hate quest systems. If this happens I'd lose all interest in HL3/Ep3.
An obscure site making a crazy claim? I'm sure it's totally legit and not to get more visitors to get more money, no not at all.
Every rumor about HL3 and EP3 turns out to be bullshit. This one will be the same.
Borderlands with HL-Artstyle, HL-Seriousness and HL-Awesomeness? Doesn't sound bad actually
*cough*dota2*cough*
DotA 2 is actually quite a fucking massive title. Nearly a hundred hero choices, loads of customization, and an extremely active community are already in the game and it's no where near completion.
I wouldn't mind open world elements like the bit with the strider battle in HL2EP2, I personally enjoy games where exploration is encouraged. It would be pretty cool to see another massive scale battle like that.
A French gaming site reports that Half-Life 3 will be launched sometime after 2013, according to their source close to Valve.
Seems legit to me guys. Everyone knows that anonymous french gaming sites are the most reliable of them all. And from the actual article itself (Google Translated): A trusted source who wishes to remain anonymous told us yet confidential details the development of Half-Life 3 . According to her, Valve has decided to make their legendary shooter game ... open-world ! It sounds like some obscure gaming site just wanted some views.
Imagine STALKER. Now replace Mutants with Aliens. Now replace Blowouts with Portal Storms. "Open-World" HL3 RPG set after HL1 but before HL2.
What? How, just what? Open world half life with rpg elements? Who came up with rumour and who was stupid enough to make news out of it?
I gotta say it'd be awesome but not as part of the HL2 Freeman story arc. Maybe as a Rebel.
I gotta say it'd be awesome but not as part of the HL2 Freeman story arc. Maybe as a Rebel.
Episode 4 kicks off the Gordon Frohman Arc
Remember how before Episode Two came out, Valve were saying that there was going to be "sprawling, free-roaming gameplay" or something of the sort? And remember how that basically just turned out to be a map at the end where you could decide which building to let the striders destroy first?
AAAUUGHH
Level 18? HURR HURR
NEW QUEST UNLOCKED "Pick up that can"
I would like an open world you need to explore to continue the game, but not quests/levels/other RPG shit. Maybe just helping opressed citizens.
"GORDON LFG ALYX for RAVENHOLM PST"
I would like an open world you need to explore to continue the game, but not quests/levels/other RPG shit. Maybe just helping opressed citizens.
Pretty much STALKER except for CLEAR OUT THE IRRADIATED PSUDO BLOODSUCKER ARMADA
that's more of an (in console terms) Xbox Live Arcade title, you still see enormous AAA ultra rich companies make Xbox Live Arcade titles Basically Valve needed a CS on consoles
They have CS on consoles already..
I'm fairly certain open-world environments are not even possible with the map format source uses. It can only just manage large maps.
I just want there to be hats.
wtb rare crowbar pm offers
First of all if it's half-life 3 and not episode 3 I am going to gut myself. EPISODE 3 SO YOU CAN FINISH THE FUCKING HALF-LIFE 2 NARRATIVE. Half-Life 3 would have to dictate a whole new series of locations, story line, and maybe even a whole new time period. Secondly, OPEN WORLD WHAT, VALVE IS NOT THAT FUCKING STUPID. The whole point of half-life is being an amazingly detailed, emotional, action packed, atmospheric, and immersive FPS that is LINEAR, the linearity of the map design is made up for by AMAZING FUCKING MOMENTS AND SET PIECES. Half-Life's core design could not work properly in an open world. Sure, valve COULD do open world very well, they just wouldn't be fucking stupid enough to do it with half-life their most beloved series. Right...?
No, it's HL3 and not Episode 3.
there is no viable proof that it's hl3 or if it's episode 3. Just pray to jeebus it's not half-life 3. It makes no logical sense to put it as half-life 3 if the next installment is just going to be based around finding and destroying the borealis, and if it really is named HL3 I suspect the borealis story would be the last you ever seen of the half-life universe. I am really hoping they stick to their original plan of expanding the half-life 2 story through episodes. Then maybe in the future we can hope for a half-life 3 that is completely fresh and separate from half-life 2's location and time. here's what I am hoping for honestly. Half-Life 1: 200X, completely different setting, different feel, different story arc, it stands on it's own. Half-Life 2: 202X, completely different setting, different feel, different story arc, drastically improved engine and character development. Stands on it's own and feels like a true and revolutionary sequel. Episode 1: Same year, same setting, same gameplay, a continuation of the ending for half-life 2, a very good expansion. Doesn't really stand on it's own. Episode 2, Same year, same setting (still around the outskirts of where hl2 took place), updated engine, completely fresh environment not seen in the series before, new characters, same half-life 2 feel, more character depth, new exciting moments, cliff hanger ending. Episode 3, same year, same world but possibly new setting (maybe quite far away from city 17), completely new winter environment, same half-life 2 feel, hopefully new weapons characters and enemies, fantastic closing to gordon's experience and story in the dystopian combine period of earth, finally redeeming what happened at black mesa and freeing the human and vortigaunt species. Stands on it's own but still related to half-life 2. Half-Life 3: Completely new revolutionary engine, brand new timeline, brand new characters, brand new setting, new gameplay elements, new enemies, new weapons. Stands completely on it's own, new story with gordon is born. To me that makes a lot more logical sense than turning episode 3 into it's own thing, because it's still connected to Half-Life 2.
An Episode 2 length Episode 3 first, released directly onto Steam with no warning. After the credits roll, the first clue of the HL3 ARG is shown... Several months later, once the ARG has been solved by the community, Half-Life 3 is released, with a single-player campaign twice as long as HL2's and with a well thought out multiplayer mode rivaling that of a primarily multiplayer game.
