Architecture, medicine, social policy, engineering, art, economics, pretty much everything flourished at this time in European history in the Carolingian and Ottonian Renaissances, and later in the Western Renaissance. The Europeans didn't just go stupid magically for centuries and contribute nothing original to human history and progress in that time.
