Worst they might get would be for inciting a panic, but that is unlikely even still. I don't know, I might join in for this. Some people want to do the lights one and some want to do the Yellowstone eruption, I'm not sure which I'd rather do or which would be funnier.

With Yellowstone, anybody nearby could call it as fake in an instant. At least with the lights, nobody can prove that they aren't there. For all they know, they just might not be able to see them.

A lot of people who know nothing would probably think it was tied to the whole "Geomagnetic Reversal" thing, and it sounds far more world ending. Lights in the sky make people just think aliens and X-Files.
Hm I doubt it. You could all argue you thought it was real.
Will they, no. Not unless something actually happens because of the actions. But they could get charged.

Very true. I guess it all comes down to whatever scenario 4chan makes more content for.
Since no one has posted this yet, here are the emails of your news organizations to tell them things are happening.

I already got my foil hat ready incase the aliens decide to come, and a years supplies worth of water and hot pockets
They kinda ruined that by talking about it on a public domain
the majority of the population doesn't even know what 4chan is, so that doesn't matter
I work tomorrow and I have to ride the bus...
So now when the world really ends on Friday all the 4channers get caught thinking it's fake.
Don't the major sites have magic internet goo to protect them from ddos

The only potential problem is if some large news outlet finds out and starts spreading the word, telling people not to panic. (And massively screwing up their info, as per usual when the news talks about the Internet.) I can see it now:
"4chan, home of the infamous hacktivist group Anonymous, is currently planning to incite mass hysteria by hacking into news websites and changing headlines and articles to reflect false 2012 doomsday reports. Sources say..."

Isn't that sentence exactly what they're doing...?
I for one will be assisting in this operation, I'm going to freak as many people out as possible one Facebook. It'll be marvelous.
Isn't that sentence exactly what they're doing...?
No, they're photoshopping
Isn't that sentence exactly what they're doing...?
They're making fake screenshots. That's far from hacking.

Am I doing it rite?
Also I know the least amount of effort was put into this. I'm tempted to post it.

I don't know what else to throw into it without making it look retarded. maybe pieces breaking off?
No, they're photoshopping
heck, some of them might not even do that
i've got some Javascript bookmarklets that allow me to just type replacement text. that combined with your favorite screenshot method and wa-bam you got yerself a fake screenshot, didn't even need to put effort into fixing positions and things.
[editline]19th December 2012[/editline]
and it's pretty likely at least one or two of them will have the same or similar bookmarklets

don't make lens flares though, that usually ruins the effect
Unfortunately, now that people know about this, the reaction is going to be lessened.
people dumb enough to panic are people dumb enough to fall for it. I mean, that's explicitly why things like the nigerian prince scam and other cheap emails are so bad, they intentionally write it so that only the biggest suckers bite.
also another ref

this reminds me of the 'strange sound heard around the world' phenomenon hoax.

it was a single guy who posted up one vid with the sounds, then a ton of people literally ripped the sound out of his video and played it (mixed well in some of them) on footage of themselves reacting. One of the biggest telltale signs of the audio copying is the seagull screech. The main parts of the sound were from an audio program that comes on mac
...you know what I might just do a little video/audio performance and pretend I posted it from my phone

I actually used a flare as my comet :v:
As for the lens flare, that's actually how my camera picked the image up. Unless you mean for the comet itself.
Man, I can already imagine everyone on my Facebook freaking the fuck out after seeing all the images.

nah, I mean adding them afterwards, in case you got any ideas in a post-production frenzy

yay for swooping
I think this is the first thing of their that I will get involved in, because it's legitimate fun.
Who can forget the infamous KGUGASCHAMBERS incident?
Marblecake?
This is hilarious, but due to the area I live in I legitimately fear for my safety if riots were to break out.
