It isn't NASA who's trying to get it back, if you read the article it says the guy trying to get it back is a former NASA employee. He doesn't work for them anymore. He's trying to get it for a museum, not for the government.
The guy's had it for many many years, so I don't know if it's really fair to take it back. It'd be kind of funny if they found out it wasn't actually a moon rock though, I mean he did find it in the trash.
100 years from now when there is a large base of civilian on the moon this article will be hilarious.
It's a rock that is practically worthless. The only value it has are bragging rights.
The rock is from the moon. A place we don't have a 100% reliable way to go to. It's not like you can fly a 747 to the moon and land on it and be back home in time for dinner, it's not on our fucking planet, and we've only been there a handful of times. I can guarantee if you put that rock in an auction it would sell for quite a bit.

He didn't find it in the trash, he found it in the rubble of a burnt down museum. If I stole something from the rubble of someones burnt down house, and held onto it for 10 years, me saying that I've had it for a decade makes it mine, is a valid argument?
decipher its component minerals and get the chinese to replicate it
It's a rock that is practically worthless. The only value it has are bragging rights.
Are you kidding me? That thing is practically priceless; not only is it from the moon its also a artifact from the Apollo 11 era. Collectors or some people have hired professionals to create counterfeits and steal them.
The government is trying to hide their sick experiments.
Hey NASA guess what, there's more moon rocks on...THE MOON!
They don't have the money to go back at the moment sadly.
Er, conflicting stories... Was it found in the trash or in the debris. Was it found in the debris that was considered trash? This has quite an impact on my opinion because there was intention to salvage what they could, then I'd consider it stealing. But if they thought they had already salvaged everything they could and planned on leaving the debris for clean up to deal with or are threw the rock into the trash, then I'd side with guy.

Yes I know.
It's from Indiana Jones.
The joke
Your head
Also, this guy seems really butthurt that he can't collect one of his precious little rocks.
I think it's retarded that a goverment can call dibs on something that's extraterrestrial...
The government owns the moon now, didn't you hear?
How about the US government stops wasting money on a retarded as fuck war, uses the money saved from that to go to the moon and take as many fucking rocks as they want?
Maybe legalize marijuana and tax it while you're at it and you'll even manage to pay your debts in a couple of years.
People will argue over anything.
I disagree!
It belongs in a museum!
Needed the image of Indie to fully get the hilarity.
It's not like there isn't plenty of rocks on the moon. Pathetic. (On NASA's part)
It's not pathetic when we haven't been on the moon for over 35 years, they're kind of in short supply.
That being said, it's the museum's bad for not trying to locate the rock after the fire, although it probably looked like a hard chunk of drywall.
When I saw the thread title, I imagined this old man who walks at the pace of a snail and tried to explain to the court that all he wanted was to keep his pet rock.
It will make a great portal conductor
I wonder how much space debris can sell for
It's not like there isn't plenty of rocks on the moon. Pathetic. (On NASA's part)
Well why don't you go up there and grab one with your two hands and bring it back?!
People will argue over anything.
no they won't
no they won't
yes they will
He should sell the moon rock to the guy who wants to put it in a museum.
Why couldn't he?
It's not like it's worth anything. Though he could try his luck and sell it for some ridiculous amount of money to some collector. If he gets to keep it, that is.
it needs to be sealed in acrylic or stored in a vacuum chamber because the earths atmosphere slowly crushes moon rocks to dust
Wouldn't that be the dullest museum ever?
"This is a moon rock. It's a rock that came from the moon."
"SHIT WOW"
"This is also a moon rock. It's another rock that came from the moon"
"another one? that's cool I guess"
"This is another a moon rock. It's a rock that came from the moon"
"oh, ermm"
Hang on, if he got in 1973 then surely legally he's had it since Time Immemorial? Or is it different in America.
Isn't it technically illegal to privately own a moon rock?
Might be one of the factors for this case.
I've got to agree with NASA on this one since the guy technically stole it.
I think it's retarded that a goverment can call dibs on something that's extraterrestrial...
I see many problems in the future that will root from exactly what you just said.
