Maybe the Vatican can shut the fuck up and stop pretending that they represent all Christians just so we wouldn't get so much fucking hate.
The Vatican represents Catholics, not any of the other sects. I don't see the Protestants with such an obnoxious organization leading them. (Still not a fan, for the record)

To represent a group of people, they must have the same beliefs as you.
I'm pretty sure the Catholics didn't flip shit over a movie. These fuckers don't represent shit, and they're starting to annoy everyone, atheists and Christians alike.
These fuckers don't represent shit
While they're not an accurate representation of the majority of catholics, they're the people than run the church that said catholics devote their lives to.
Avatar = Dances with Wolves.
Except instead of Indians it has blue people that do Indian shit and instead of the US Cavalry you get space marines. Probably one of the most unoriginal films released in the last decade. Albeit still very entertaining.
Avatar's visual effects don't impress me. :colbert:
we're talking about the new Avatar movie here! not Avatar the anime.
Also The Last Samurai.
[editline]02:02AM[/editline]
oh you bastard
Of course it wasn't a masterpiece. It doesn't take an in depth look to figure that out.

Originality does not necessitate quality.
Sometimes it is better to build upon and improve that which is already established and finely tuned. That's how entire genres get started.
Like, for instance, the Zombie subgenre:
Voodoo Myth > Night of the Living Dead > Dawn of the Dead (and sequels) > Various sequels > 28 Days Later > 28 Weeks Later > Left 4 Dead > etc. etc.
It went from evil spirits to shambling cannibals to infectious necrotic virus to super rabies to fast zombies, etc. etc.
With each retelling some new tidbits are added to the canon of the story, new ideas are introduced that will become a standard for the next reteller. And as different stories are told using the same common threads, the overall idea is gradually improved, the kinks are ironed out and it presents a good story for those who are hearing it for the first time.
Remember, not everyone had seen Dances with Wolves, and not everyone in this generation has the patience for a Spaghetti Western's pacing and style. This presents a similar story to a virgin audience.

Haha virgin audience get it

I get what you're saying, and I never said it was bad. Just that it's unoriginal. It's basically a mashup of all of the other white guilt movies out there like Pocahontas, FernGully, Last Samurai, etc.
Then again, any movie looks bad if you over analyze it. Like Star Wars. All that is is a spaghetti western in space.
Mmm hmm, right, so what the Vatican wants, is the blue cat alien things is not to be Pagan? And this is of upmost importance, because why?
:eng99: :catholic:

It's like a District 9 Apartheid crossover. With more Pope.
Are Christians still crusading against the Pagans? I thought this ended a long fucking time ago.
Well they did get extremely close to wiping Paganism from the Western World. I'd imagine seeing all the religions that you had triumphantly suppressed and destroyed over the past 1.5 millenia rise from the ashes and grow would piss a lot of extremists off.

Breaking News: If you think about it, no movie has a truly original story. Someone, somewhere, has thought of it before.
Jesus christ, people need to stop being so goddamn obsessive over this movie. This isn't news, it's just a bunch of old pricks up in some fancy lookin church giving their say on a movie that has gotten way too much media attention due to "hurr durr BLU SMURF CAT SEX SEEN" and "brb gonna go kill myself cuz Pandora dun exist".
we're talking about the new Avatar movie here! not Avatar the anime.
Oh really? Sorry, I've been living under a rock for the last three months. What is this Avatar movie, and who are these blue people?
I don't know how anyone calls it a masterpiece though, one day it's visual effects will be surpassed, and then the movie will have nothing of value left. If it had a decent story, it might become a classic. The original Star Wars movies aren't visually impressive compared to current movies, but it has a good enough story to still be relevant today. Citizen Kane was in black & white, and it's still considered a great movie; however, b&w films do have their own sort of visual appeal.
In 5 years, Avatar is going to be completely forgotten because it's only strength will have been surpassed by hundreds of other movies.
The Catholics and I now have two things in common.
I actually agree with most of what the Vatican is saying, and I'm not even religious.
So the Vatican has been reduced to reviewing movies.
They must be desperate. :v:
So worshipping Nature is wrong but worshipping some guy is right. Get fucked Vatican, oh wait I forgot you guys can't :downs:

Actually I think they we're more right with the thing about you shouldn't be respecting nature more than man. Some Catholic propaganda is to be expected from the Vatican, but they do actually make some logical points if you see past the religious crap.

It's a MOVIE, goddamn!
I stopped reading the article when they called the movie racist
It's a MOVIE, goddamn!
Really? I thought it was a book.
Hey Benedict what did you think of Inglourious Basterds you NAZI
The Bible wasn't a masterpiece either, but the Pope doesn't hear me talking shit about it.
I'm sorry Pope :ohdear:
Isn't Taoism or Shinto the worship, or more like "connection" with nature?
and i don't think the vatican realizes that the movie is about native Americans...
those religions and beliefs are more into pantheism then pagan... from what I heard.
The vatican is scared of hippies obviously.
Seriously though I think that the church feels threatened
The pope is a na'vi :smug:

Taoism is more about becoming one with the natural way of things.
Cameron "tells the story without going deep into it, and ends up falling into sappiness," said L'Osservatore Romano. Vatican Radio called it "rather harmless" but said it was no heir to sci-fi masterpieces of the past.

"Not much behind the images" was how the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, summed it up in a headline.

To Vatican critics, the alien extravaganza is just "bland."
I definitely agree with what they said there, though I'm pretty sure that Facepunch immediately went into "Burn the Christian" mode as soon as they read the first 7 letters of the title and focused only on the "It's heretic!" parts of the thing (and I'm atheist).
