Yeah. It's- I mean, the Vatican didn't even say anything extreme. Just a few film critics therein said that they didn't like it. And then it mentions that the Pope (who is pretty fly for a Pope) doesn't support the deification of nature. It's not like he said, "Burn James Cameron and boycott his films!"
the real theme is about respecting others' differences
This bugs me so much. If the person in charge of the entire storyline of the movie himself said that the theme is this, why do people feel the need to nitpick and analyze it over and over again. It's his goddamn movie, he decides what it's about, not the goddamn Pope.
I definitely agree with what they said there, though I'm pretty sure that Facepunch immediately went into "Burn the Christian" mode as soon as they read the first 7 letters of the title and focused only on the "It's heretic!" parts of the thing (and I'm atheist).
The first thing I thought was "Oh look, a sudden outbreak of common sense from a place usually lacking it!"
Pope is a killjoy who won't let us enjoy a pretty good movie at face value. Sure the story is a little tired (i.e. pasted from Dances With Wolves) but it's still well made, the performances were believable, and the CGI was fantastic. I suppose if the Pope was the director instead of Cameron it would just be how the humans invaded Pandora and forced the population to embrace Christian ideals.
Avatar is great entertainment, nothing more.
Oh no this fictional religion is undermining OUR fictional religion
:psyboom:
I liked it more when JP2 was in instead of emperor palpitine of the nazis. JP2 didn't bitch about everything and actually made things better.
>Implying I give two shits about the Vatican's opinion * > The Vatican's opinion
Actually I think they we're more right with the thing about you shouldn't be respecting nature more than man. Some Catholic propaganda is to be expected from the Vatican, but they do actually make some logical points if you see past the religious crap.
You don't agree with respecting nature more than mankind? Isn't it such environments that allow us to survive? At most, we are on par with nature - we're not even the most successful lifeform in Darwinian terms. Also: "the Vatican...make some logical points"? lol.
I bet there's nothing they couldn't take as an offense against religion.
Actually I think they we're more right with the thing about you shouldn't be respecting nature more than man. Some Catholic propaganda is to be expected from the Vatican, but they do actually make some logical points if you see past the religious crap.
Why is it up to them to decide who we should and shouldn't respect or worship? That's my choice and always will be. This is the trouble with any centralised mass religion, it's not about worshipping, it is about controlling. If you were an omnipotent being wouldn't you just tell people what you wanted subconsciously instead of via some old guy living in his own private palace? Nature worship is undoubtedly the oldest religious idea on earth, and it makes sense to respect nature far more than any single person when it can go and wipe out your entire village with just a swarm of ants. To me it sounds like the Vatican is almost scared that people might actually begin to like the idea of respecting the world around them and thinking for themselves about what is right and wrong.
Dear Vatican, Nobody gives a flying shit about what you think. Sincerely, Everybody who is sane
:irony:
Meh, I kind of agree with them. It was too "Hollywood", it didn't try anything new. All that's really good about it are the special effects. I think most of you guys are disagreeing with them because the Catholics killed a few scientists there and there automerge
You don't agree with respecting nature more than mankind?
No.
Isn't it such environments that allow us to survive?
Yes (though now we are becoming quite independent from the environment).
At most, we are on par with nature -
No.
we're not even the most successful lifeform in Darwinian terms.
No (meaning "Yes we are").
It's the new pope. He seems determined to take catholics back to the dark ages.
I preffered John Paul II. He got involved but at the same time wan't pushy or too blatant. Most things he said were cryptic.
Man, hippies have so much to answer for. They successfully made most of us sane westerners subconsciously hate anything involving the words 'respect' and 'nature' in the same sentence. Irony at it's greatest. Also I'm willing to bet that all those idiots calling it racist are actually white.
When people over-analyze ANYTHING, it will stop making sense. But I don't see how a race of smurfs is compromising OUR religion all the way on the other side of the galaxy with THEIR religion. They (the Vatican) has ceased to make sense and begun simply to plead for attention. :Dawkins102:
The Vatican ruin everything don't they? Why don't you let people worship or praise what they want in peace.
They're not totally wrong, it was a pretty bland movie plot wise. The effects were great but the actual story was regular blockbuster drivel.
not even the most successful lifeform in Darwinian terms.
How does one become this stupid?
No. Yes (though now we are becoming quite independent from the environment). No. No (meaning "Yes we are").
I wasn't replying to you. In anycase, I really like you backed up your opinions there. Independant from our environment? We need to eat, drink and breathe to survive, it is the planet and everything within it that provides this for us. And ok, we're pretty smart right? We can build things - useful things and useless things, and equally destroy things, sure, but you can't disagree there are other lifeforms (including the microscopic) that are far more hardy and have been on the planet far longer than we have, so it really depends what you define as success - in the end, there's no point, no actual goal to the universe right? Except to live, I'd say then they're pretty successful.
How does one become this stupid?
How does one become this uninformed?
Read the original script.

If you mean simply to have lived the longest, then yes, pre-historic bacteria win easily. But if you're talking about scientific advancement or societal complexity, then humans win outright.
How does one become this stupid?
Well technically he's right, in Darwinian terms organisms like bacteria are insects are far, far, far, far, far more successful. You're harbouring thousands of times more bacteria inside you right now than you have actual cells. It depends how you define successful, it's subjective. Why does it matter how successful something is anyway? I'm proud of humanity for all the incredible (in my opinion) things we have done, that's why I'm studying Engineering. But nature is incredible too, it created us for one thing.
It's a damn movie, don't think people are going to start worshiping nature and running around naked with blue body paint on.
I couldn't care less about what the Vatican have to say about anything.
It's a damn movie, don't think people are going to start worshiping nature and running around naked with blue body paint on.
Good sir, this is the internet. I would say it is very likely this has already happened.
Silly Catholics cant tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but I guess thats why they believe in mythical stories from the bible.
They are just madz0r because of the huge ass gigantic boobies :v:
