are you for real??
he was probably going "wtf why are u threatening my wife????"
"i haven't talked to her since she asked me for drinks"
"dont lie to me why are you threatening her"
Even if it played exactly as you describe that is no excuse to start crying. In a professional setting, no matter who says what you don't cry. I don't understand why people can't understand that. Are people saying if someone is mean to me I can start crying as a legitimate response at work?
What she needed to do is maintain her composure, take notes on everything said and done, then present her side plainly as it happened. No need to drama queen it up with 'they made me cry so they're bad' types of complaints, it's irrelevant.
When you are in a position that requires convincing other people, people who don't know who the hell you are, that you are telling it like it is, crap like emotional instability does not help your case. It makes people like me wonder if you're enough of a basket case to start crying at work, how am I supposed to take you seriously?

Your emotionlessness is so manly
I bet this guy is chopping wood or breaking in horses or something while he posts
So, should it be acceptable for men to break down into tears, or unacceptable for women to do so?
So, should it be acceptable for men to break down into tears, or unacceptable for women to do so?
Emotions are a normal part of being human
If you're constantly surrounded by people who are assholes and you need to be around them every day to make a living then crying is a pretty normal response

If Barack Obama broke down in tears after some particularly vicious commentary, what would people think of him?

Cool, I'll remember that next time I'm feeling down at work, it'll turn out well.

Github and the White House, two equally serious workplaces

Crying is bad because the reactions to it by other people are bad?
Your argument is shit

stop.
sexual harassment and workplace discrimination based on gender is not playing the "sex card". How could you even come to that conclusion?

there's nothing edgy or cool about being an emotionless robot and you're not going to prove that to anybody by acting like she did the wrong thing by having an involuntary fucking response to her hard work being deleted, being harassed by another woman day in and day out, and being yelled at by her seemingly terrible boss without doing anything to deserve it.
The Sex Card is probably going to be used more than the Race Card soon.
don't
[editline]17th March 2014[/editline]
waa all of these fucking women want to change MY workplace!!!!!
I don't know what she was expecting. I mean, you don't see me working at places named WankerCenter or BastardNexus and complaining bout the people there.
Sad to read this, although it doesn't feel that surprising and some of the comments in this thread are a bit eyebrow raising
Always great to see people trying to encouraging women to do coding, though, I'd love to see that happen more often
The Sex Card is probably going to be used more than the Race Card soon.
talking about sex AND race card, fucking hell you've got to be one of the worst people on this forum
This thread is a fucking trainwreck holy hell.
Her colleagues were making inappropriate jokes about her on their systems and communications.
She got intimidated to the point of crying by the founder and his wife (who isn't even an employee), who threatened her if she left GitHub.
She was told to stop having a relationship with another employee.
GitHub's HR department refused to help her.
Another employee hit on her and started fucking with her work when she rejected him and nobody stopped him.
And finally, two of her female colleagues were dancing to some music and a bunch of male colleagues were gawking at them unabashedly.
But according to some posters in this thread, this is all okay, apparently it's her feminist entitlement speaking, not a shitty company full of awful people.
I don't know what she was expecting. I mean, you don't see me working at places named WankerCenter or BastardNexus and complaining bout the people there.
are you serious
you can't fucking blame her for being harassed because she wanted to be programmer
Why does the entirety of Facepunch break out in tears as soon as there's even the slightest suggestion that someone/something was sexist towards a woman.
If this is a guy we were talking about here there would be a lot more sympathetic posts, but then again the more vocal SH posters probably think feminism is a buzzword.
This is legitimately why we need feminism. Not the whole reason why, but if women keep getting treated like this at their workplaces and the reactions to the news articles about it are so negative, yeah, those are reasons.

In short, Horvath said that she felt she was being treated differently internally simply due to her gender and not the quality of her work. She calls her colleagues’ response to her own work and the work of other female GitHub employees a “serious problem.” Despite GitHub hiring more female developers, Horvath said she struggled to feel welcome.

By looking at her github I can assume that her quality of work was extremely poor and that she did fuck-all
Github is full of gits, who would have thought
According to a lot of Facepunchers, sexism simply can't exist in the tech industry. Nope, impossible.
Absolutely pathetic.

Honestly I don't think you are invested enough in the IT culture/tech industry to know what is really going on. There is relatively speaking no more sexism in the tech industry then in other industries. The problem is that there a not a lot of women in the tech industry because no women study it because it's too "geeky" etc. There are huge outreach programs going on trying to make women join the tech industry.
There have been a couple of incidents but they often get blown way out of proportion.
(the link was the first google hit just google "donglegate")

Good thing they can still be countered by a Blue-Eyes White Dragon
Sometimes i wonder how hard it is for some of you butt-heads to stop the "LEL FEMINAZIS ON TEH MARCH" bullshit and actually put yourself in someone elses shoes for once.
The bit with the guy hitting on her is particularly easy to empathize with ffs:
You now work as a programmer at a company called Butt-Byte, you are in a relationship with a girl at work, and all the staff are aware of this.
One day some Smelly fat guy you work with professes his eternal love for you-
you arent at all interested in this ugly weirdo from work and reject him explaining you aren't interested and point to your current relationship as evidence of this.
To get back at you for rejecting him, something you are perfectly entitled to have done, this guy now begins fucking with your work, messing around with the job you are paid to do, and deleting chunks of code you have spent hours of time and effort on.
Nobody is doing anything to put a stop to this, so your quality of work is suffering massively at no fault of your own.
Can you honestly say you be at all happy in this situation and feel you are being treated fairly?
Unintentional commentary on white people there, whoops
Good thing they can still be countered by a Blue-Eyes White Dragon
sounds racist
While the above was going on, Horvath had what she referred to as an awkward, almost aggressive encounter with another GitHub employee, who asked himself over to “talk,” and then professed his love, and “hesitated” when asked to leave. Horvath was in a committed relationship at the time, something this other employee was well aware of, according to her.
The rejection of the other employee led to something of an internal battle at GitHub. According to Horvath, the engineer, “hurt from my rejection, started passive-aggressively ripping out my code from projects we had worked on together without so much as a ping or a comment. I even had to have a few of his commits reverted. I would work on something, go to bed, and wake up to find my work gone without any explanation.” The employee in question, according to Horvath, is both “well-liked at GitHub” and “popular in the community.”
His “behavior towards female employees,” according to Horvath, “especially those he sees as opportunities is disgusting.”
this shit blows my mind
like, how can you be this way? How can you possibly think this is ok
there's nothing edgy or cool about being an emotionless robot and you're not going to prove that to anybody...
It's not about being emotionless. And I don't need to prove anything to anyone.
Work, your profession, is not the place for certain things. Going into a rage and picking up something then throwing it into a wall so it shatters- no room for that sort of behavior at work. Just because a guy rages online in games at home doesn't mean he can bring that to work.
Well, the same with stuff like crying. You don't cry in front of your co-workers, and sure as hell not in front of your boss or bosses, with the exception that you've suffered a serious physical injury, then by all means cry. You can't cry because of words though, that's lame.
She needs to prove her allegations. That's much easier to do the more reasonable she sounds. That's all I'm saying. Someone who wants me to take them seriously can't tell me "Then he said mean things and made me cry". Sorry, but that's where you lose me.
