And they wonder why people are going atheist....
And they wonder why people are going atheist....
Yeah, for completely different reasons.
I seem to have a very different experience than yours. I have known plenty of atheists (one of them was a good friend of mine, unfortunately) who hated gays for dumb reasons not worth mentioning and openly expressed their contempt for them. So no, they didn't justify it with religious text, but that doesn't make it any less aggravating. Yes there are far too many mouthpieces of Christianity that wrongfully warps homosexuality as some evil agenda, but statements like "very, very few" atheists and "many, many Christians" are just outright oversimplifications to be honest. For what little it's worth, I'm religious and don't discriminate against sexual preferences.
The point was religious "homophobes" are driven by a misguided belief, whereas atheists are just being assholes. You can't change someone being an asshole when they're a kid, but you can implant religious beliefs that cause this irrational hatred, which is why religious anti-homosexuality is worse - it can be prevented. If you hate gays, that's fine. You'll look like a bigoted tool if you live anywhere other than the Middle East or southern US, but if you hate someone, you hate 'em, and you bear the responsibility for your actions against them (if you choose to pursue any). But with religion, it's possible to avoid all of that if they weren't taught these stupidly hateful ideals from birth. However, our anecdotal evidence means nothing - Christians overall tend to be more anti-gay than atheists, anyway.
Hey Lynda Rose, since you love using shit from the Bible to get your way, check this out. Deuteronomy 22:28-29: If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her. If I rape you then we have to get married, but only after I give your dad a $50. This is why I have Anti-Gay activists, they use their religious freedom to cherry pick quotes from their favorite book, and then use that to justify their hatred towards gays.
Leviticus 19:19: "'Keep my decrees. "'Do not mate different kinds of animals. "'Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. "'Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
They won't be appearing on London Buses, they've just been banned by the transport chiefs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-17693947
"Some people are gay. GET OVER IT!" Zing. [editline]13th April 2012[/editline]
I'm genuinely curious as to how many people would "change" sexuality with these ads. What was their plan? A gay person will see a bus ad while walking down the sidewalk, think about it for a second, and all the sudden be into chicks? [editline]12th April 2012[/editline] "into" chicks.
maybe he'll trip and his pants will fall off and dick miraculously fall into a vagina and he'll realize the wrongness of his ways!
If the bus ads in question said something like "God is real, here is why" and just in general promote Christianity I'd have no problem because this is constantly happening. Instead these ads are explicitly promoting bigotry. That's where I draw the line. It would be hypocritical if I said the former ads weren't allowed but similar atheists ads were but I'm not. These ignorant people are using religion as a vehicle for their hate, and it's important to separate extremist Christian groups with the moderate ones.
I wish I could hit agree more than once.
