Yes and No. The one point Notch did talk about a modding API he wanted to charge money for it. Nobody else wanted that, and from that point Notch never spoke of the subject again. Now that Notch has left Minecraft development, Mojang is actually trying to make a modding API again, and this time not bothering to try and make money off of it. Problem is Minecraft's code is such a mess that they can't make a modding API without cleaning it up first.
He wants money for it the same reason valve wants money for greenlight, google wants money to submit and apple ditto. To prevent people from posting shitty things that could cause end-user issues.
it's all a matter of making money
You changed bro, You changed...
Why are you complaining about this? This is how all decent MMOs function - he needs to pay for server costs. Its better than Pay2Win.
Bandwith does not cost that much anymore to warrant a $15/month fee just to play. Maybe ten years ago but today that is way too much and chances are that he will go for $15 a month since that is the MMO standard. [editline]1st December 2012[/editline]
This, a million times this. He never really cared that the game, at any stage, wasn't even near completion, he just added a feature after an unnecessary break, then took more time off. He rarely put in any real effort into it, and then eventually passed the work on to one of the people he hired. This went on for what, two years? We saw the transition from alpha to beta, without any real changes, and then beta to release. Each of these saw a doubling in the cost of the game. When it was 'finished', he essentially abandoned it. The game wasn't even close to being done, so many promises of content, especially for those who bought early (Yeah yeah, I'm bringing out more game modes, also, zombie defence etc). No, he added this horrible endgame including a boss that, no joke, took over a year to even have sounds. It took until earlier this year for any actual challenging enemies for the adventure mode to be added. And all it really was were large sword wielding skeletons and a sorta buggy boss. Anyone remember prefix mobs? Yeah, Notch doesn't either.
Even more so when I can't access my Alpha account anymore since it basically got lost when they moved all accounts to their dumb mojang account system. It took support two months to reply or something.
You guys are stupid. Any P2P model for 0x10c will be for processing power to host the "hyperplayer" mode which is basically a huge server. 0x10c is built around players having a DCPU-16 computer that the player can program, which the server has to emulate. I understand you all love to hate Notch, but it's totally reasonable to charge a subscription fee for a MMO.
If Valve was doing this they'd all have a simultaneous orgasm and hand over the entirety of the contents in their wallets.
It's been a long time, if not years since I've played, what exactly did he promise? And I mean really promise, not just speculating on things he wants to do.
One thing I've noticed is that people have taken random mentions of things as promises. If Notch mentioned wanting to do something a couple of years ago it's now been turned into a "promise that he broke". It's like getting angry at Valve that the Hydra wasn't in HL2, plans changes, ideas don't work out, etc.
Haha holy fuck you entitled little shits You seem to live in some sort of utopian world where people devote all their time making games and give them away out of the kindness of their hearts while tweets and blog posts with mentions of features are signed contracts In the real world servers and bandwidth for millions of players cost a lot of money, a business have to pay administrative fees and pay its employees, adults have personal lives and families to tend to and can't spend all their time playing games and coding I have no opinion in regards to 0x10c but it's in alpha stage isn't it? It's too early to say wether it's going to be crap or not.
There's tons of little details, but the big one, in my opinion, is when he tried to change the wording of the contract that people agreed to when he first started selling the title. The general gist of it was that you would get all future updates for the game for free. The contract had no clauses allowing it to be amended, and was wonderfully simple. It looked every bit like someone who actually cared about creating something was at the helm. Then he tried to change that. He talked about wanting to add paid DLC. And then there was a shitstorm. Even now, the license you get new accounts under is significantly different than the one that the early adopters got, and has far fewer rights associated with it.
I wonder what the difference is between the alpha and beta license, i bought minecraft during beta.
I wonder what the difference is between the alpha and beta license, i bought minecraft during beta.
Alpha buyers are guaranteed every update to Minecraft for free. Beta buyers are not.
As well as some minor updates, the transition from Alpha saw a 50% price increase (therefore making the cost 25% off the full price), a change in the disclaimer (Notch removed the line that said "all future updates will be provided free of charge", though the statement still applies to users who bought Minecraft before Beta was released. So, I'm not quite understanding what you can do in this game after watching those gameplay videos..
Oh please Notch take my money.
That actually looks good, but monthly payments and Notch most likely going to abandon it is keeping me away.
So, I'm not quite understanding what you can do in this game after watching those gameplay videos..
It's supposedly going to be a space game where you have a huge galaxy to explore. It's set in the year 281474976712644 AD, where the universe is (heat) dying, and derelict ships litter what few star systems haven't been consumed by black holes. The main selling point of the game so far is that your ship has a simulated 16-bit computer you program in Assembly language to control your ship. They really haven't said much more than that. If Notch doesn't go crazy and fire his artist this time around, it might come out looking pretty nice, but I'm not sure if it'll be worth paying for. People have inferred that you'll be able to make real money off of it if you're a programmer good enough to either teach others or sell code, but I don't know that a market like that will appear.
That actually looks good, but monthly payments and Notch most likely going to abandon it is keeping me away.
You can't be serious about this. The colors look like it's back in the age of 16bit color mapping. I mean, even compared to Minecraft, that's still really bad.
