i will never understand why FPers come into a thread, argue about a subject they know nothing about, yet defend their opinion as being right despite tons of counter evidence and reasoning.
at least you admit it.

it's not that i dont know anything about it, i've just got a few holes here and there.

okay so your idea of a perfect system is that society screws people over and then helps some of the get back up with those social programs? what if we didnt screw them in the first place.
I know right
double ninja

Alright what's your great idea pal
clearly.
because you've spent years researching your side of the argument and yours is 100% perfect and anyone that disagrees is wrong.
honestly no.

Diminishing marginal returns means that the more wealth a given person accumulates, the less difference additional wealth makes to his quality of life. For example, if you gave a broke person $100,000 it would change his life. If you gave a successful executive $500,000 it would be a boon, but not life-changing. If you gave Bill Gates $1,000,000 it would be a nice little gift.
So as you can see, even if you proportionally increase the amount of money, it still has relatively less value. The same is true in reverse--take 1/5 of Bill Gates's earnings in a given year, and he still has billions of dollars in savings. Take 1/5 of a dockworker's income, and you probably just took away Christmas, his kid's birthday party, and his cancer treatment for the next year. Alternatively, you could lower the tax percentage way down until it no longer threatens the dockworker's livelihood, but since you have a flat tax and just lowered it to almost nothing across the board, the government now has no money for welfare, public schools, national parks, police, or defense.
That's why most serious economists (and pretty much all social activists) don't like the flat tax.
you could at least try to give a reason.
Because rich do not get taxed very much at all, especially in relation to what they need to have. Does anybody really need to make any more than $200,000 a year after taxes? Hell no. Anything above a net $200,000 is basically hoarding.
And maybe this is being biased, but as you go down the human development index you start to go UP the list on countries that use Flat Tax systems.
Ideally, people who make absurd amounts of money should probably be taxed up around 30%, (or higher) whereas people making 40,000- should be taxed around 15-20% As people's incomes get higher, their tax rate should jump upwards astronomically. If the tax rate is fixed at 10-15% then people who make 40,000 a year are stuck with 34,000 to live off of, whereas somebody who makes 500, 000 is left with only a whopping 425,000 dollars to [del]live off of[/del] roll around in.
well fuck i just lost.
ah well.

Nice to see someone being a good sport about it for a change :riker:
:buddy:
We're recovering from a recession, you would think that we should tax people instead of dishing out cuts like Bush did and run the economy further aground.
if i have to work hard to earn money why should i work hard if taxes take it away?
Only saw this now, does somebody who makes $500,000 annually work 12.5x harder than somebody who makes 40,000? I imagine not.
This isn't necessarily at you, this just seems to be a common mindset... if you hadn't made that remark somebody else would have.

i guess i meant worked harder to get to his position.
You can spend 12 years earning a phd and you can still make under 6 figures depending where and what field you work. People who make huge amounts of money simply got lucky, at the time they just happened to work into a field or service that is greatly in demand.

you cant remove luck.
[editline]09:11PM[/editline]
anyway i'm out for the night, th89 kicked my ass
What the hell is that supposed to mean. If luck manifests itself as large sums of cash, then yes, it can rightfully be removed.
Support your argument with facts please.
i assure you many people in low class jobs work just as hard as people in the higher class jobs. your an idiot if you think otherwise.
What the hell is that supposed to mean. If luck manifests itself as large sums of cash, then yes, it can rightfully be removed.
luck manifests almost everything
For all the shit about, "we need no taxes/flat tax to motivate us to work."

I go to a fancy private school where me and everybody are rich, the other kids talk about always voting Republican to get taxed less, ignoring their other stupid policies. I can't speak for my family's finances since I don't contribute to it, but I would be OK with more taxes for the rich, meaning ending the Bush-era tax cuts.
Get rid of income tax. Run it all purely on a high sales tax.
Even if taxes were raised the government would still be wasting money on things that aren't necessary.
