Newfoundland Driving School to Stop Teaching Stick Shift

I'm getting much more used to manual now, and I have to say kicking into vtec is fucking exhilarating. I've never looked forward to driving to work so much before now.

I dunno how old you are, but mature drivers don't feel the need to redline their engine or even rev it so much that the valves change to the discrete high-performance cam profile, when they drive to work.
People who feel superior because they drive a stick shift are full of themselves. I drive a Ford Mustang and I get shit all the time for driving an automatic v6 instead of the 5.0.
you get shit cause you're driving an enthusiasts car with the soul of an appliance
manual is just more fun, getting auto in a fun car kinda kills it.
[editline]2nd July 2015[/editline]
enthusiasts give you shit cause like buying the car like that is just buying it for the image, its the same reason stance gets so much shit cause its all about the image and 0 about the car and actually driving
I don't know how much is automatic popular here but I know only one person who has a car with automatic. I don't think it's even his main car. As for me, I hate driving and I wish I had an automatic.
I'm English, have an automatic license and only drive automatics
I will never drive a manual car so what's the point? The driving instructors that only did automatics here were actually cheaper than the manual ones as our 'family' instructor gave me a big discount.
(and don't say well you might drive one because I never will, all the cars in my family are automatic)

And? Are you also salty because of the OP's stupid comment? The news is about an American place ceasing to teach manual to those who want it. It's not about great britain abolishing automatic-only licenses. Like I said before, nobody's pointing a gun at you for you to drive manual.
Also what you said doesn't really change the fact that you might need to someday drive a car that doesn't belong to your family.
I wish there was somewhere around here that taught manual
automatic is so fucking boring, but I never went to drivers' ed or anything and have no fucking clue how to drive manual

It's not difficult to learn, luckily.
It takes like 10 minutes to learn the basics so you can function with it. With experience you'll just get better

I'm not poor, I'll buy an automatic car. I will never drive a manual. I think you misunderstood me, I own my car, I paid for it myself, I was saying that literally everyone in my family drives automatics.
And not salty over the OPs stupid comment, salty over most of the stupid comments in this entire thread from people who've probably never driven in their lives.

Newfoundland is in Canada, it even says that in the OP

Such as?

I'm sorry if I seem confrontational, I'm tired.
I count people rating pro-automatic posts as 'dumb' without giving an argument, as comments. A lot of the roads where I live are small country roads where it'd be hell to drive manual on. I'm not saying manuals are awful or anything, I just prefer automatics, have never had a problem with one breaking down, and don't want yet another thing to have to concentrate on while driving. Each to their own I guess.
Reading back to my earlier post I did sound a little angry.. once again, sorry about that..
Really? You can learn to drive manual within an hour. Even in a few minutes.
Thanks for this great post. How is learning how to lift your left foot slowly supposed to be hard?

can u "learn" manual in 10 minutes: ya. can u function with the nuances of starting, stopping, changing, etc and in a functional, safe way such that you get around like everyone else in the world after an hour of driving manual: no. pls. let's not pretend that there's no reason that the vast majority of america drives automatic.

My first driving lesson was driving circles in a parking lot stopping and going for 10 minutes. I stalled 2 or 3 times. And this was with a shitty nissan almera that has no torque. After that we started driving in traffic
It's not difficult to learn, luckily.
but there is literally nothing I can learn on
I can't just get in some used car at a dealer and wing it
Wouldn't it be nice to have a driving school where you can jump in to a manual and train yourself? yeah. you can't do that anymore

i consider myself a coordinated person and it's taking a long time to get used to my parents' passat. it's got a massive pull and it's hyper sensitive inside a single centimeter.

the manual crowd is so confusing. i see a lot of elitism amongst people that drive manual (automatics are for lazies, autotragic, etc), and i'm seeing a lot of people in here bragging about how easy it is.

In a "safe way"? Yeah, you can learn the basics and operate a manual transmission safely in under an hour. I don't know how it was with you but my first lesson was a ten minute one where all I did was turn the wheel while the instructor operated everything else, and in the lesson after that I was the one operating it. On public roads. Instructor never needed to butt in to prevent a crash.
And stop writing in such a shitpostey manner.
let's not pretend that there's no reason that the vast majority of america drives automatic
What is that reason, exactly? Do Americans have an inherent learning issue with manual transmission that I'm not aware of? If the vast majority of Europeans do it, with much lower accident rates all across the board, any reason why Americans can't?

You're talking rubbish. First, what exactly does being poor have to do with driving manual? As if a cheap car gets expensive just because it's got automatic transmission. As if there aren't expensive cars with manual gearbox. As if there aren't dirt cheap cars with automatic transmission. It doesn't make that much of a difference in the price of the vehicle. So don't be going "lol you poor people and your manuals"
Second, what does you having a car that you paid for have to do with what I said at all? I'll just repeat what I said, just because you or your family don't own a manual car doesn't mean a situation will never arise in which you won't have to operate a manual gearbox.
And what "stupid comments in this entire thread from people who've probably never driven in their lives"? You mean "people who prefer a different style of driving than you do"? Your holier-than-thou attitude is quite puzzling, considering you seem smug about the fact that you don't know how to operate something 95% of drivers in the UK do.

It's ironic that you complain about stupid people making comments and saying that they have probably never driven and yet you just admitted that you somehow "prefer" automatics despite not ever having driven a manual. And what exactly is it with you guys and thinking you need to "concentrate" to operate a manual, despite everyone and their bloody dog repeating that it becomes basically second nature ad nauseum?

When you're in the car, you feel when it starts "pulling" when you lift the clutch and that's all you need. when the car does that you don't even need gas, it',ll move on it's own

If it's a diesel you can usually even hold it in place uphill just by using the clutch.

What I mean is my Passat's clutch has an extremely large range of motion and is very heavy even though it's only sensitive within a frustratingly small space. It also doesn't do that if I mess with the clutch without gas.

it's not as deep as that.

No, it's just unless you're an enthusiast or buying an old car you don't really need to learn how to use manual transmission.
No, it's just unless you're an enthusiast or buying an old car you don't really need to learn how to use manual transmission.
You don't, but that's not really what's being discussed here.
Newfoundland is in Canada, it even says that in the OP
You do realize that Canada is in North America, right? That means Newfoundland is an American location. Just because stuff from the US is generally what people mean when they refer to American things doesn't mean that other stuff from the continent stops being American.

dont do this unless you like wasting money

North American =/= American
[editline]3rd July 2015[/editline]
I mean technically, you're not wrong, but when was the last time you heard anyone refer to Canadians, Mexicans, or anyone from Central/South America as "Americans"?
Never really got used to driving automatic
feels like the things are about to enter hyper space when you lift your leg from brake
