name one situation where you can be sexist against a woman without it being misogynist

Sexists are not always misogynists
"When a man claims that women are naturally maternal, or are by default, bad drivers, he is a sexist. If he was to add that women are only good for a fuck and should be confined to servicing men and their children, it is misogyny. Misogynists are always sexist, but sexists are not always misogynists. For example, if a man says of a woman, "Look at the state of that fat, ugly cow, I wouldn't touch her with yours," then he is a misogynist. It would follow that he does not respect women as equals and is therefore also a sexist."
You can like women and be sexist, you can hate women and be sexist and misogynist.
that doesn't really matter? max's point was that in the gaming community there is a large anti-female bias in which women are discriminated against because they don't generally "fit" into the gaming community. whether or not you as an individual agree with this bias doesn't matter, the fact is that it exists and is an example (albeit a very specific and small example) of gender discrimination against females
are you sure such a bias in the community exists as a whole?
I'd argue that the actions of a few trolls and misogynists in a male community make it seem otherwise.
Are you incapable of reading or you do have to be an ass all the time? I already stated multiple times that I now see that my definition is false.

The difference, in my mind, is the scale of the view/attitude.
if you want people to stop pointing out how stupid your definition of sexism is stop defending it
Are you always a misogynist even if you call a woman a fat cow once.
no, you can reform your position and regret it and such. i don't think a single one of us can say we've never done anything misogynist, racist, homophobic, etc. it's institutional and we gotta rail against that
if you want people to stop pointing out how stupid your definition of sexism is stop defending it
I'm not defending it. You asked what my view was when I said that, and I answered.

i'm really not in the mood to get into a comprehensive discussion of whether the overwhelmingly male gaming community is overwhelmingly misogynistic or not but i can only hope you at least understand the point max is making?
[editline]17th October 2012[/editline]
I'm not defending it. You asked what my view was when I said that, and I answered.
and i told you why your view is wrong and now you're upset because apparently you realize your view is wrong and i'm being mean by reiterating it? idk why you're even posting if this is the case
It fucking pisses me off how people think the whole "be nice to women" is proof against misogyny
But to be honest, I don't need to explain/argue here, Dori and SigmaLambda have actually made really good points and argued well. I salute you good sirs.
I'm not defending it. You asked what my view was when I said that, and I answered.
then why are you conducting yourself by being rude
you are going to be called out for your questionable opinions
i'm really not in the mood to get into a comprehensive discussion of whether the overwhelmingly male gaming community is overwhelmingly misogynistic or not but i can only hope you at least understand the point max is making?
I do and I agree that it is characteristic of a certain subset of the community but as you said I don't want to discuss the overall demographics.
However I'd say it isn't drilled into my head by my peers and the media.
You can like women and be sexist, you can hate women and be sexist and misogynist.
the maternity one is a good point. i guess some sexist division will always exist as long as men and women's bodies do different things
I'm going to have to disagree with this
some people may use misogynistic slurs for their shock value in poor judgement, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're a misogynist.
that's literally what I said
that's literally what I said

hey dude if you call a woman a fat cow it's probably a sign that you're a misogynist. even if you think you're not a misogynist, you're still reinforcing misogyny
when you say "even if you think you're not" you're implying that person is still a misogynist despite wanting to think that he isn't.

I've seen Dori do this with other people before. I don't think he's worth listening to if he's going to be like that
^ who fucking cares about your qualm with dori dude cool yourself

sorry dude, if you use gendered insults you are a misogynist. that doesn't mean you're an irredeemably bad person
sorry dude, if you use gendered insults you are a misogynist. that doesn't mean you're an irredeemably bad person
You should have said this years ago, have it as your title or something. This completely changes my view of you, and your opinion towards misogyny.
I mean, one of the reasons I argued about this every time is that it seems like you mark everyone who sometimes says misogynist things as a terrible human being branded for life.
thank you for your insightful observation, your contribution to the thread has been noted and is much appreciated (just kidding these stupid sideline observational posts suck stop making them)
Goddamn, I'm just trying to lighten up the mood.
sorry dude, if you use gendered insults you are a misogynist. that doesn't mean you're an irredeemably bad person
wow backpedal harder?
you agreed to that.
I'm assuming you're saying gendered insult = misogynistic slur.
I'm saying people may use gendered slurs for their increased shock value, in poor judgement. Doing so doesn't make you a misogynist, it makes you an angry person who used a gendered insult against a specific woman because they really were angry at that specific woman at a specific point in time, and they knew that the connotations society attached to the word would make it more offensive and hurtful to that specific woman.

i love this post so much because you're actually coming out and patting dori on the back for not being the imaginary bizarro-dori you've crafted in your head based on everyone else's exaggerated posts about him

by doing so you are reinforcing misogyny culture, thereby making you a misogynist
everybody is a misogynist to a certain degree because misogyny is deeply ingrained in society. that doesn't make misogyny excusable in any way. if you refuse to acknowledge that you're a misogynist when you're called out on it, you're an asshole

if you use loaded slurs against someone just because you know it'll hurt them then you're an asshole first and foremost and anything else is secondary
um white male privilege is a real thing. the fact that you think otherwise is a sign that you benefit from it
I was gonna say something but then I realized you're Dori and I won't get anywhere nevermind
You're just sitting in this thread calling everybody a misogynist and shit-talking MRAs
hmm I wonder if deeply entrenched misogyny (the ideal woman in the west being delicate, celibate, and obedient) has anything to do with that
Something I sort of agree with. In my experience I see that men generally tend to be more attracted to women like that, and women generally tend to be more attracted to men who are strong, dominant, and proud of their masculinity, and men with those characteristics are more likely to be misogynists. It's this that sort of strengthens the ideas (mostly through first-hand experience) that women are vulnerable and men are dominant and exploitive of women (it works both ways)
Just a thought.
by doing so you are reinforcing misogyny culture, thereby making you a misogynist
ok. I'll make a concession with you on this point.
A person who uses a misogynistic slur in anger against a specific woman despite not wanting to reinforce misogynistic culture is a "accidental misogynist".
A person who uses misogynistic slurs with the intent to reinforce misogynistic culture is a "purposeful misogynist"
the second variety is significantly more harmful than the first, the first is a label that's transient and not as important.
OK?
i love this post so much because you're actually coming out and patting dori on the back for not being the imaginary bizarro-dori you've crafted in your head based on everyone else's exaggerated posts about him
Well, yeah. But that's because without that teeny bit of information, he's just stepping on everyone's toes because not a single person has never said misogynist things, which makes people very defensive.
Also calling everyone an MRA doesn't really help either.
if you use loaded slurs against someone just because you know it'll hurt them then you're an asshole first and foremost and anything else is secondary
yes, I'm aware of that, I'm just throwing a hypothetical situation out there.

nah just kidding you bitched out and made another "heh.. its dori guys.." post that accomplished literally nothing
