We'll call ours Starship Troopers then. wait, neverind.
Atleast I got most of my spacemarines and daemon hunters back when they were cheap. Grey Knight terminators ftw.
Thank god, space marine is a shitty term. I hope this serves as a defacto ban on it.
My thoughts mirror those already expressed in the thread; I love the lore, I like the models, and I enjoyed the hobby, but I just can't afford to keep up with it. Everything about it is expensive and it is entirely dependent on having other players/clubs near you.
Warhammer 40k Has always been one of my fave sci-fi settings, ill admit im a huge fanboy. the lore is awesome, the models and the game were fun and it made some awesome video games. Now we have some retard who feels an intence desire to retcon all the stories i grew up with- and hes writing all the bloody codexs, the new deamons look like some dumb shit from world of warcraft, the prices are so high that even a fan-boy like me simply cant afford to enjoy a hobbie ive been part of since i was 6 years old, and the company is so paranoid about people ripping them off that they are sueing shadows. what the fuck happened to you games workshop?
SPESS MEHRINEZ
The biggest issue on prices? The rule-book. It costs 75 Dollars (48 Pounds[approx]) For something that's 80% fluff.
Each time I walk past a Games Workshop where I live, I always see a few dregs of humanity inside. [editline]7th February 2013[/editline] Do they still do that Lord of the Rings series? I have to admit those looked really good.
game workshop getting desperate due to the advent of 3d printers? i mean you could just print yourself a few space marines among friends instead of paying for overpriced plastic.
man i'd be scared if i was games workshop. 3D printers are going to completely destroy their sales of the figures. all they'll have left to sell is paints i guess.
game workshop getting desperate due to the advent of 3d printers? i mean you could just print yourself a few space marines among friends instead of paying for overpriced plastic.
I don't know anything about W40K but can't you just already buy a bunch of random cheap plastic soldiers and pretend they're space marines? (If you just want to play and don't really care about collecting and painting figures)

As long as important units are easily identifiable.
to be honest, the only thing i buy from gamesworkshop these days are the novels and the videogames. Im certainly going to be printing my own space marines as soon as possible. Such a shame that ill never get to teach my kids how to paint minitures at this rate, most people i know who play 40k got into it becuase a dad a, brother or an uncle had a collection.

Also the story of the setting never seems to move on, apparently the astronomincanom thingy is meant to be dimming, yet everything seems exactly the same.
The Astroemperormindpower was dimming when i was twelve. They seriously need to advance the damn plot and stop trying to squeeze money out of what we already have. if they advanced the plot we could then have an assload of new characters, units, heros hell we could even have a new faction, or the return of an old one- there would be hundreds of shiny new models to sell and masses of novels to ship - the only difference between that and what they are currently doing, is that having new uints pop up as they are advancing the plot is actully interesting, and not quite so tranparently money grabbing.

They care more about money than having an enjoyable game, they'll gladly retcon everything if it means more money or an excuse to put prices up. The new Necrons aren't a complete retcon, they've always had an Egyptian theme. The backstory for them hasn't been removed, just changed slightly.

I like the one about gathering all his bastards and sacrificing them best, fits the tone well. And a new Great Crusade would be amazing.

And they have done stuff into the 42nd millenium, there would be no need to change the name.

The Necrons have always had a Tomb-king/Egyptian style Theme (Hieroglyph style writing, Scarbs, Tomb-worlds, Monoliths, 2nd edition lords etc). All they've done is expand on that. From what i've seen the only real changes with the new Codex was the overthrowing the C'tan so they aren't at their full power (which makes much more sense than being able to take out a God with a Melta) and them wanting to reclaim their Empire.
In terms of table top being able to kill a C'tan with a melta isnt that much of a problem, the actual table top has tons of inconsistencies with the actual fluff, like how space marines are supposed to be worth 1,000 of any other troop yet die pretty easily in table top.
Well, they did make rules for Movie Marines, but I think they cost a something like a thousand points each, so basically they were like an extra powerful harlequin troop.
They have made new units, it's just some of them are absolutely terrible, like that horrendous dreadknight, who on earth thought a walking baby carrier was a good idea?
yeah, thats what i meant, instead of coming out with balls out stupid units and SUDDENLY FROM NOWHERE mary sue heros before just tacking them onto existing armys, they could actully have had new characters and units with depth deeper than a butter tub and a reason to exist.
game workshop getting desperate due to the advent of 3d printers? i mean you could just print yourself a few space marines among friends instead of paying for overpriced plastic.
By the gods you are a genius. Now I really wish I had a 3d printer.

In terms of actual cost, maybe, but in terms of combat skill they aren't. There are a few inconsistencies in TableTop but that is sometimes just due to exaggerating in the fluff (although there are things like Avatars being taken out fairly easily). Having a star-god on the field that is taken out easily is quite a big inconsistency, more so than any other i can think of.
They're just panicking because they've been losing sales, probably because everything they sell is way way overpriced.
It certainly wouldn't hurt them any to beef up production in preparation for a sale every now and again. Seriously, they probably get enough sales during tax-returns but if they had a SALE combined with that? They'd be rolling in money if they had any sense. It's just a shame that between the rising costs and the 6th Edition release leaving a bad taste in my mouth (what, you want alot of Deff Dreadz in your army? TOO BAD HULLPOINTS 3 THEY CAN BE GLANCED TO DEATH HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh and your KFF is nerfed too) that I was forced to moth-ball my Ork horde in favor of Warmachine. Don't even get me started on the paint. $3-4 for .4 oz. of paint is high-way robbery, I just go to Hobby Lobby, and spend $1 on 2 oz. of paint that when watered down does just as good a job as you can expect paint to do. [editline]8th February 2013[/editline]
It's got a lotto do with the almost monopoly like status they have. Since you can't play Warhammer 40k without their models, everyone who wants to play that particular game has to go through them, allowing them to charge what they like with little opposition. Their brands are pretty much what keeps them in business.
This as well. There was a law-suit recently where I heard they tried suing some company that was making models for 40K that consisted of units GW didn't have models for yet. Thankfully GW lost that one for that reason (remember the SUDDENLY MODELS wave they had not too long ago? Yeah, that's why).
Well, if anyone has a claim to it, it is games workshop, but I'm still not sure how I feel about this.
No one should have ownership of the generic name "Space Marine".
No one should have ownership of the generic name "Space Marine".
I didn't actually think they did, but then:
Space Marine, the Space Marine logo, GW, Games Workshop, the Games Workshop logo, 40K, Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer 40,000 Device, 40,000, the Double-headed Eagle device and all associated marks, logos, places, names, creatures, races and race insignia/devices/logos/symbols, vehicles, locations, weapons, units and unit insignia, characters, products, illustrations and images from the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine game and the Warhammer 40,000 universe are either ®, ™ and/or © Games Workshop Ltd 2000-2011
So apparently they do, but I don't think they can enforce it for stuff before they registered it, at the very least.
