I'm guessing Matt Ward got transferred to the legal department?
No one should have ownership of the generic name "Space Marine".
Which is why I said how I'm not sure how I feel about this. The only claim they should have is when people make use of space marine, and all the underlying concepts that accompany them (IE copying them with a slightly different skin).
I'm guessing Matt Ward got transferred to the legal department?
Nah - it would be a net improvement if he was.
I didn't actually think they did, but then: So apparently they do, but I don't think they can enforce it for stuff before they registered it, at the very least.
Nah, GW doesn't have a copyright on the term space marine, but on the capitalized title Space Marine. So you can make a game about space marines (marines in space) or space Marines (USMC Marines in space) but if you make a game about Space Marines they might try to sue. It is a pretty trivial distinction, but I'm fairly certain GW did originate the use of the term 'space marine' as a title rather than as a description so they at least have some claim there.
I BET MATT WARDS BEHIND THIS
With everyone bitching about the prices of 40k pieces, why not just head over to your local makershed/botshop and use the 3d printer to print your own figurines?
With everyone bitching about the prices of 40k pieces, why not just head over to your local makershed/botshop and use the 3d printer to print your own figurines?
3D printing is expensive and fairly slow in the home market, and the resolution, while okay, isn't what I'd call table-top quality. Privateer Press makes some of their models through 3D printing and then using those to make molds, and it shows on certain models where you can see/feel the ridges made through the printing process. And while MakerBots/RepRaps are fairly cheap though capable machines in and of themselves, the reels of ABS plastic are actually pretty expensive.
I don't theres one anywhere near to me locally, plus I'd need to molds.
Ignoring the totally shattered grammar of this sentence, you don't need to mold the figurines. The models are online to download for free.

The problem however still stands that I have no access to a 3D printer in the local area, if I did I'd be printing off warhounds right now.
Thats nothing Try Storm Shields on TERMINATORS that have a better chance of absorbing a fucking Titan Cannon shot THAN TAU MANTA SHIELDING! Pinnacle-of-technology Titan shields [img_thumb]http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1252499_99120101037_SMCloseComTermmain_873x627.jpg[/img_thumb] Handheld shields Why is it that a melta gun has better odds of piercing a Land Raider than killing a Terminator with Storm Shield?
Well, Terminator Armor was created in part from Engineering hardsuits that were for use in plasma reactors, so they naturally have high temperature tolerance, plus the Storm Shield emits a power field thus helping negate the melta. wheras the Land Raider, is pretty much just a vehicle adapted to warfare. It's pretty much a glorified tractor (especially given that it was part of the STC system therefore any colony would be able to build it, which doesnt exactly scream military technology) It just seems powerful due to how much humanity has slid backwards.
