In many states it's legal for an employer to fire someone simply for being gay, and in many states homosexual couples aren't allowed to adopt, regardless of how qualified they are. And there's more than just legal means of discrimination. Good luck getting elected into any major political position if you're a homosexual. It happens sometimes, but a lot of the time it'll be a career killer.
