Schools will be desolate until Wednesday but drivers are getting schooled on a new law that started Monday.
The new 30 kilometre per hour school zone speed limit will be the new normal on over 500 streets around 171 schools.
“We want people to really slow down in these particular zones and again it’s for the safety of the young kids,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen.
What were they before? around here it's 25-20.

Whoops it wasn't mph, 30 kph is actually pretty norm around where I live.
Bit faster than the standard in mid TN. 15MPH unless it's a LONG ways off the road, then 30. This is ~18MPH, so just a tick faster than TN.
Speed limits in school zones in Toronto are usually 40, 30 is only on residential streets that people bitched about streetracing on so they put in speedbumps. Fines also double in school zones in Toronto.

Usually 50 km/h is the year-round school zone speed limit, but now they have signs saying "30 KM/H SEPT-JUNE" in school zones. So it's 50 during the summer, 30 during the school year. Pretty reasonable IMO.
We have 40km/h School Zones here in Australia between 8:00-9:30, and 14:30-16:00.
It's a brilliant idea.
My dad used to petition for this to be a thing back when I was younger due to kids getting hit by speeding cars near our schools
Took like 16 years for them to do anything

The fact that it's a blanket 7 straight to 5 ban is the shitty thing. Two different times like Australia would be better, especially considering the fact that high schools and middle schools are seemingly exempt from this.

I've seen 8-9:30/14:30-16 speed limits here though. This 30 km/h limit is monthly, you can't go over 30 km/h at any time until after June.

There's a highway patrol car over the crest of this hill I pass to get to work every morning where the speed limit goes from 70 to 40.
Always there for the last 10-15mins of the school zone before it goes back to 70.
Reckon he grabs a few dozen cars a day that don't slow down fast enough.
Personally I think they're fucking retarded but because the zones around here are on highways near schools that I've never once seen a kid crossing at.
Down the back streets I couldn't give a shit because I wouldn't go over 40 through those anyway.

Here in BC, it's 30km/h normally, 50km/h if the school has fences along the road 8am-5pm on school days (Mon-Fri, 8am ~ 5pm). It's pretty reasonable.
I'm gonna guess that it was 50km/h before.
Here in Indiana they just say "20mph Limit when school children are present"
Our speed limits for schools are 15, and 10 for some k-4 schools, in Maine.

There's 80km/h out in the country iirc

It used to be 60km/h for school zones when the speed limit is 80km/h or over, but VicRoads, at least in Victoria, has removed that capacity, and now all school zones for new and reviewed speed limit areas must be 40km/h.
Fun, having to reduce your speed by 60km/h.

in a lot of places cops will nab you for going over the limit during the day on a weekday regardless of the presence of children, it's a loose reason and it's hard to fight a penalty ticket with the opener "well I was doing 15 over the schoolzone speedlimit in a schoolzone on a schoolday during school hours, but-"

or be bad ass like where I am and have the speed limit change only when "children are present"
All of the school zones near where I live have these:

They flash in the morning starting from 30 minutes before school starts until school starts, and in the afternoon for 30 minutes after school lets out.
Speed bumps also helps enforce a low speed.
Where I live, you go 20km/h if you are in a school zone and see a kid. If there are no kids, you can go the norm (which is usually 50km/h in residential areas).
Speed bumps also helps enforce a low speed.
they're permanent
the point of school speed limits is that it's on roads (passing by the school grounds, not on school ground) that are usually much faster, as it may be dangerous for kids to be near a high speed busy road when they're walking home from school. This way the road can remain high speed for the majority of a weekday, on weekends, over summer/winter, etc, while still enforcing a safety measure during the critical hours
And now instead of paying attention to the road people will be watching their speedometers and looking out for the photo radar vehicles!
In Britain, we have 20mph school zones, often with speed bumps too. Normally there's a picture of a happy snail, saying "Twenty is plenty", on the lampposts.
Meanwhile in Alberta they increased the time in which playground and schools zones are in effect. Used to be from 7:30am to like 5pm for school zones and 8:30am until one hour after sunset for playground zones. Now they've fucking made it so both start a 7:30am and last until 9pm. Like really? What fucking kid is trolling around their school at like 8:30pm unless they have to be there? I live next to a damn school and once like 6pm roles around the place is deserted.
Wow, I thought that was a standard all over the world. I guess Balkans is in front of Canada at least in this.
