Now they'll continue gender selective births until they have two sons to take care of them when they're old.
Maybe they'll want a son to take over the family and a daughter to try and marry off into another wealthy family.
you have a kid not because you want to raise one, but because it's tradition and because they're expected to take care of you when you're old that leads to some kids being treated more like social security than an actual person
Have you tried considering that Chinese families WANT to have kids and ALSO want them to take care of them when they get older?
-snip- i am dumb
China will grow larger.
Excuse me but we didn't have a one child policy here. It's more like a family planning campaign that was successful...too successful.

Since when the fuck was it a one child policy Its called 'stop at two'
My mistake. Point still stands tho that the population control measures being lifted didn't lead to birth rates recovering.
My mistake. Point still stands tho that the population control measures being lifted didn't lead to birth rates recovering.
AFAIK Singapore is a rich and modern country, and Wikipedia says "Due to scarcity of land, 80.4% of resident households live in subsidised, high-rise, public housing apartments known as "HDB flats": I think once you move your population from rural areas into small apartments in the city the birth rate automatically goes down. The price of progress, who will want to raise 3-4 kids in a small apartment ? Then add modern "anti children" and family views, and way of life that favors individualism and independence, long and constant education required to get a job... and it's no wonder birth rates aren't going up. I'm not talking about Singapore, but in general. I think once you get to that point there is no turning back.
Their one child policy may sound crazy and all, but at the end I don't think the country would be able to handle those extra 400 million people. That would make around 2 billion people in China by 2030. It would have probably lead to hunger, massive exodus, and probably force them to a territorial expansion aka war with their neighboring countries.
they could put those extra 400 million into the ghost cities they have
