We tip in America because it's just nice. As long as the waiter isn't a total fuck and at least pretends like they enjoy doing what they do then maybe they do deserve a tip for putting up with people.
Pope's in Bethlehem?
Also, what the fuck. Arrested for not tipping? Seriously.
Probably late but I cba to read the entire thread:
Most places enforce gratuity on groups of 8+ people. They should've known better
the fact that you stated that waiters would intentionally mistreat you is extremely juvenile and shows absolutely no experience in the subject, and making such a completely dumb statement leads one to believe that you're a child, no offense
Ok hold on right there. Over here (Argentina) any kind of tipping is customary, not mandatory. Waiters and waitresses actually have pretty respectable salaries, specially if they work at restaurants/pubs located downtown -believe me, I have my sources-, and because of that, some of them can afford (no pun intended) to act like jerks, which includes: they build very little rapport or none at all, they don't make you feel comfortable about you being at that restaurant, they don't ask you how good were the dishes, they don't really know what are the ingredients on a "today's specials" dish -this happens almost ALL THE TIME!-, etc etc (i'm sure you already know what I'm talking about).
Let me share something with you: When I go to a restaurant, if the empty, dirty dishes stay on my table for more than 10', then I probably won't tip. If I ask for a "today's specials" dish and it takes fuckin' forever when it shouldn't -the quickest they served me was around 10 minutes IIRC-, then I won't tip. Just to name a few off the top of my head.
Is that wrong??
As far as I'm concerned, the waiter/waitress is the _Face_ of the restaurant and you tip-- scratch that, reward them for the overall service. if the food was average, the wait time was average (say, 20'-25') but the waiter was a dick, then I'm not tipping. If the food was excellent, I waited very little for it to be served and the waiter was surprisingly helpful, then I'd probably tip... 10%. I'd rather thank him and ask for his supervisor so I could recommend him for a raise, than giving him a tip. In the long haul that'd be better for him, other than depending on tips.
But that's just my opinion, of course...
I insist. Reservoir Dogs's Mr. Pink had a point. They don't count *only* on tips to survive, that's why they have a salary... And if they don't make enough money they can quit any time or get another job and work double...
They make below minimum wage because their employer expects that they'll make up the difference in tips, so they kind of do count on them.
We tip in America because it's just nice. As long as the waiter isn't a total fuck and at least pretends like they enjoy doing what they do then maybe they do deserve a tip for putting up with people.
4th post i've seen with the word "we" in it. who the fuck is "we". you don't speak for america.
It isn't so wrong to be charged a tip so long as you know how much the meal is going to cost before you buy it.
If i walked into a restaurent and asked how much it would cost for certain meal, and the guy told me and i bought the meal i would be pissed off if i was given the bill and found an extra charge for service on it. if i asked how much the meal would cost and and he told me the cost and told me the service charge as well then it wouldn't matter. If you don't bother to ask and just order your meal then expect to pay however much it costs.
The guy refusing to pay the service charge is an idiot. however long it took them to serve him he still got served and he still ate his meal. If he didn't like the service he should have left, he didn't have to eat the meal, if he finally got served and it had taken too long then he could have taken the meal up to the desk and told them to take it back.
When you recieve a service you can't take it back and you can't refuse to pay for it no matter how crap it was
if they are getting less than minimum wage isn't that technically illegal?
Get a job as a server, then come back to this thread.
There are actually two minimum wages and if you have ever worked at a restaurant you would know this.
The minmum wage for Ohio as an example for non-tipping positions is $7.15 or so.
The minimum wage for a tipped position on the other hand is only about $3.15/hr.
If you work in a position where your job involves giving services that would get 3rd party commision/tips (aka serving), then your minimum wage is much lower than that of standard minimum.
Now don't go crying that poor miss server can't pay her bills, because the irony is that 9 times out of 10 the servers will make the most money, because they can make up to $100 a shift in tips alone if they are good.
Obviously if the server is shit, don't tip.
Now if you're the poor cheapskate douchebag who never tips because you're selfish even when given good service, then you are pretty much one of those anti-trend tools. Sorry to say it. Fact of the matter is you tip for good service, you tip lower for standard service, and you don't tip for bad service. If you choose not think of it in this light, that's up to you but in my honest opinion it makes you out to be a selfish prick, even if you think the concept of tipping is silly (deal with it).

Ninja'd on first page, I should have probibly finished reading it.
Mandatory tips are stupid and restaurants that do it should be shut down
Also protip:
99% of servers hate serving high school kids and will most likely steriotype against you. Why? Because most of them have the whole "it's my money I won't tip" attitude about them, and don't understand what tipping is.
Just incase you've ever wondered why you always get terrible service if you go to a resturant with some friends.
I used to live in Bethlehem!!!
You tip waiters whose services are out of the ordinary. Waiters who are extravagantly friendly and dedicated to making your meal that much better, who, even if you are made to wait for longer than usual, keep you updated and check on you every so often to make sure you're enjoying yourself despite the wait. Waiters who are overachievers.
The waiters described in this article did not fit this description. They did not deserve tips.
I work in a Cafe/Restaurant where we don't get tips, yet we still try and do all that you've mentioned, even during our rush hours. It's just common courtesy.
Not in Sweden.
Or in Singapore.
I fucking hate places that require you to tip. It's like.. Fuck off, if I like your work then I'll tip you but if you don't deserve it then why the fuck should I?
Wise words passed down to me by my father:
:siren:If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat in a restaurant:siren:
Waitresses and Waiters make minimum wage, and the work is very difficult. If you refuse to tip, you should just be banned from the restaurant for begin a prick. Regardless of how the service was, you should always pay some sort of tip. Still, an arrest for this is over the top.
For all the people saying that tipping is stupid, you're not realizing that's how they make their money.
My friend used to work at a restaurant and only made like 2.12 and hour. Waiters have their own minimum wage otherwise they'd be making way too much money. Still, it's really stupid to be arrested for not tipping a person.
I've never understood the Unites States system, you guys must fucking hate tourists that don't realise you need to tip.
In Australia you don't usually tip, waiters get paid enough that they really don't need it. If the guy's good etc, then sure you can tip though.
Ok you guys can stop pointing out how hard it is to work as a waiter/waitress, we get the idea. I just dislike the idea of changing a customary for an obligation.
BTW, in Japan they don't accept tips at all, they consider that very rude... and I'm sure they bust their asses as much (probably more, since they're all workaholic nutjobs over there lol) as their american-european-etc counterparts... what I mean is, everywhere one can go, tipping is just a *customary*, not an obligation...
I've never understood the Unites States system, you guys must fucking hate tourists that don't realise you need to tip.
Yeah, I wonder how they handle that...

Not tipping would be like watching an old lady slip on ice and break her hip, and then you just walk away. Because getting help is only *customary*
If you're not going to tip, then don't eat in a restaurant. It's as simple as that.
Wait, tips are mandatory? I've never seen a tip on an actual bill...
In England if you go to TGI fridays with a group larger than 6, tipping is added to the bill which is ludicrous and makes splitting the bill very irritating.

I don't tip garbage-collectors because they do a good job. I don't tip taxi drivers because they do a good job.
They're doing their job and should be paid thereafter. If your job is to serve people food and act nice, you should get paid for that. Tipping is overall a bad system and should be removed.
[sp]you're not gonna get laid because you tip her[/sp]
I lol'd hard. Definite win. Also, there is an update on the article: the charges were dropped, thankfully.

I usually tip.
That being said, you're a fucking retard. Tips are NOT mandatory, and if I feel someone doesn't deserve one, they don't get one. That simple.
Do I get a tip for offering good service at the bakery? No. Does my brother get tips for making great food and giving good service at the theatre? No. I see tons of customer service jobs without tips, so tips are definitely not something I'm about to dole out all fucking willy-nilly.

a waiter's job is to make sure that the food gets to the customer without dropping on the floor
that's it
anything else is bells and whistles

If they act like asshole it's unlikely they're going to keep their job. This applies to every job.
What the fuck? For that money (2,7€) I wouldn't even spit on the ground.
I currently make 7€ which is $10,45 and I need a better job because this is the first proper job and it pays shit.
Of course it's next to nothing, I made 12 dollars an hour in reality, but 4 dollars was my base pay from the restaurant. The other 8 dollars an hour came from tips. NOW do you see why tips are so important?
We don't tip in Australia.
(It's because minimum wage here is almost twice as much as minimum wage in the US.)
We tip in America because it's just nice. As long as the waiter isn't a total fuck and at least pretends like they enjoy doing what they do then maybe they do deserve a tip for putting up with people.
That is not why you americans tip. You tip because of your shitty laws and your faggoty minimum wage.
Wait, tips are mandatory? I've never seen a tip on an actual bill...
A lot more chinese restaurants do it, I remember going out for a birthday meal and we had to pay a £20 mandatory tip for a £100 meal. Sucks balls to be honest, never going to go there again.
The fact that so many people here don't know why one should tip (because otherwise the server would be making next to nothing) is pretty scary.

A lot of the people on FP are either: Not in the US, or 13 (or both). So it doesn't matter.

It's cultural, here in the Netherlands (and probably other countries) it's not that common to tip, servers get paid normally so they don't need it.
