Not tipping would be like watching an old lady slip on ice and break her hip, and then you just walk away. Because getting help is only *customary*
I don't know where you live but here you're forced by law to help other people if they are in need and you can even go to prison if you don't.
Oh wait, the couple was arrested, too - never mind then.
It's cultural, here in the Netherlands (and probably other countries) it's not that common to tip, servers get paid normally so they don't need it.
Tips are included in the bill in the Netherlands, as well as most European countries. That's why all the Europeans are bitching in here, they don't understand that in the USA servers' wages are the tips.
A lot of the people on FP are either: Not in the US, or 13 (or both). So it doesn't matter.
Yea, you're right.
I never give tips.
They are there for my service, it's their JOB to serve me. Why would they receive more money for doing their regularly job?
If your job entails receiving tip, then in the united states, employers do not have to pay minimum wage, thus, waiters/waitresses make most of their money from tips. I get paid 6.00 USD an hour (min wage is 7.25) and on a good day I can pull in over 60 bucks, it's good money.

I do understand that, and tips are not included in the bill in Sweden.
I just made my statement that tipping is dumb and should be re-done.
here in england we never give tips
Well, maybe cheap people like yourself don't. But if the service was good, I'm quite happy to give my waiter a tip.
Here in Norway those working in restaurants and suchlike get paid "decently", aka it's not necessarily the best paid job, but it's ok (I've worked in some myself, mostly during the summer.). Therefore it's a bit hard for me to see the role tipping have in the american system. Here we tip (At least I do, and my father is usually also keen on tipping) if the service is good and we feel the staff deserves it, it's not a necessity.
I can, however, understand that tipping is an important part of the income for the employees in the american system, and in my opinion it sounds horrible. Good for the companies, but bad for the employees.
I've been to that diner, their food really isn't that good.
My dad went to the US once and payed 10$ for a cup of coffee (he was in a hurry, I guess). The next time he went there a waiter came to his table immediately

Yep, pretty much.
I still don't understand why americans insist on the relationship between being immature/young and not tipping... it's not mandatory outside the States, it's just customary, PERIOD!! >:(
Tips are optional, for me.
If the service sucks, I don't tip. It's that simple. If the service is normal, a normal tip is left. The amount of the tip scales proportionally to how exceptional the service is, as well.

lucky?

In some cases, you only earn $2.50 an hour if you are a waitress but you get to keep you tips. Or all of the waitresses have to pool all of their tips and get equal shares.
That is why.
I can do a shitty job and still get paid the same amount. If i do a good job no one is going to give me a bonus or a tip. Tipping is a dumb practice (except in the US)
You can't really compare an office job with being a waiter. The whole point of tipping is you're serving random people - the same way you sometimes tip maids or bell boys or people who wash your car. It's a cultural thing, if nothing else.

Once my parents had no change for a tip. We left the money and ran out :tinfoil:
Wait, tips are mandatory? I've never seen a tip on an actual bill...
Stateside it is common for them to add 18% or similar to unusually large parties. Like in this it was a party of 8. The couple plus six friends.

They're doing their job - serving. It's their job and they should be paid like everyone else. No more no less.

Yes but when the service is shit, why should we pay.
Last place I went to where we had to pay a mandatory tip the service was shit, the bitch of a waitress told me to move out the way, didnt even politely ask or anything like that, we only got our first order delivered when we wanted more drink or food we kept having to get up and get someone to come over, load of crap to be honest.
If they act like asshole it's unlikely they're going to keep their job. This applies to every job.
not acting like an asshole in no way is similar to being nice

I meant the tip.
They should have their salary, nothing more. I've already said that the tipping system should be re-worked.
I almost never tip, because it is their job, and chicks act like sluts just to get a bigger tip
when i do i put like one dollar only
Wow that's dumb.
Well if you don't like it, don't go out to a restaurant. Nobody is forcing you to go to a restaurant, you can eat at home and you don't have to tip at all (holy crap!). I'm not sure why people find this so complicated.

I bet you're popular with the ladies with a bitter attitude like that.

It's not complicated and no, I don't like it and it's not going to stop me from eating at a restaurant. Just because they're doing their job doesn't mean they should have more money. They have their specific task to do, and they fulfill them.
I might give them a pat on the back at most.
"Good job, son."

That's the thing, if they don't get tips, they actually have less money than the other people, at least compared to the difficulty-of-work:wage ratio of the job. Not tipping a waitress is about the same as not paying the restaurant for their food.
Regardless of whether you think they should just be paid more so you don't have to tip, the fact is, that's not the way it works in most restaurants. So until that does start happening, pay your tips.

The thing is, I'm not from U.S
Listen up you stupid motherfuckers, always leave a tip.
You know why? Because the service industry is an example of what I call "legal slave labor". That guy/girl that just brought you out your food is in no position to be able to sustain themselves. The establishment has NO laws stating that they must pay minimum wage, and you know why? Tips COUNT.
I work at a restaurant and know many people who rely on tips to stay afloat. One server was homeless for three days because he didn't have the money to stay in his apartment. Another is a single mom raising two kids, so on and so forth.
Before any of you fuckers say "I'm not gonna tip, that's stupid, why should i pay you for doing your job", go ahead and get a job in the service industry. Try and support yourself on minimum/below minimum wage. It's not fucking easy.

Go ahead, get a decent education and a real job.
No one is forcing you to work in the service industry.
