The metal oxide coating California's "Cool Cars" regulation mandates for car windows starting in 2010 doesn't just reflect sunlight—it also bounces the signals for cellphones, GPS navigators and, um, parolees' ankle bracelets, making reception noticeably crappier.
Which, I suppose, is one way to kill two birds with a single government-tossed stone: people won't be texting while driving because they can't get a decent signal anywhere, and cars will have a smaller carbon footprint since they won't get as hot. The whole GPS navigators sucking and not being able to accurately track parolees is a different problem for a different day, really.
The car manufacturers, for their part, would prefer a coating that absorbs energy, instead of reflects it, which they say would leave wireless signals unmangled, but I bet slightly warmer.
Save the environment by making people drive around for twice as long because their GPS doesn't work!
More human brilliance!

GPS: Making people find the way from Wallmart to home since 1984
Also you could just use external antennas.
Glad I'm not in California.
External Antennae plus internal transmitters.
This is stupid.
So that was what was happening.
If it aint broke dont fix it.
No more radio on the road.

Yeah, damn those car makers putting those antennas inside the car instead of sticking them outside.
Not worth it.
"parolees' ankle bracelets"

Now give us a goddamn salt-corrosion-proof coating regulation on all external car parts in the Northern states now

Blocking cell phone signals has some crazy laws surrounding it. I'm not sure this is actually legal in California by their own laws.
The reason being that you need to be able to call 911 from ANYWHERE.
roll down window?
Doesn't a metal Faraday cage box thing block signals anyway?
I remember when we had to use our BRAINS to drive instead of GPS, I see no problem with this.

Turn 5 right over crest don't cut
Another completely stupid thing my idiotic state government just did.
Yeah, it is a real pleasant thought that I will be stuck in this shithole at the mercy of these idiots for at very least the next 5 years.

GPS is for thick people, can't you see that?
Just use an RAC supplied A-Z Map book.
