So as somebody completely new to the Diablo genre, what should I expect from this game? Sounds like a generic-but-well-made RPG, the kind of game that's generic by now because of how it influenced others (like Half-Life for instance). Which I guess is fine for people that like it like that and DiabloII fans of course.
Is that assumption correct? Any comparisons possible to other fantasy RPGs like Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls or Arcanum (or World of Warcraft if the gap isn't too big)?

Well ubisoft tried to do something like that and even though it took about 2 weeks, a emulator was made.
Now the same for Episode 3.

Everyone should try out Diablo2(+Lod) if possible. Whether it's pirating it or lending from a friend whatever, it feels really strange and scary. Though in D3 it's smoother and all, D2 is OLD and low res I think.
[b]Edit[/b] I'm disappointed how the old-school transparent map over the screen (toggled by tab) is gone in Diablo 3. :(

I'm assuming you're referring to HOMM 6's DRM system which is completely different; last I checked all it did was connect to a server to unlock equipment/units, it didn't control the entire game.

The only way you can get it to work if you have win 7 or vista is by downloading it off B.net.

To be honest, I really don't care about Half-Life 3 anymore. I find it really hard to get excited over because I'm having too much fun with other games.

It's the exact opposite with me. The only recent game that managed to make me slightly enthusiastic about its release was Skyrim. I'm going to come buckets when EP3 is announced.

They had good reason to change a lot of things from Diablo II, such as the horrible economy (dupers and botters), imbalanced classes/skills/weapons, useless gold, only one mercenary being useful out of four, etc.
Also, how did you manage to get beta key? Have four Bnet accounts with different games and not a single invite.

If they made Diablo 2.5 then people would bitch about it being a rehash like with Starcraft 2. Instead, they're actually changing things quite a bit (considering how it's been 11 1/2 years) and people are bitching that they changed too much.

Personally I've enjoyed what I've played in the beta, the actual gameplay/combat is infinitely better than Diablo 2's.
