How much difference would this even make? Does Britain still have any actual sway over Australia or is it just tradition at this point?
after the 80's Britain has 0 control over Australia's laws, the only thing is the Queen. Technically, if the Queen was to visit, she could legally do anything she pleases but she would never do such a thing regardless. [editline]28th June 2016[/editline]
Also the governor general(the Queen's representative) dissolved parliament in 1975 which was a pretty big deal. The Queen still maintains executive power but I expect it would be huge drama if any of her powers were actually used today. Personally I've seen it as one of the biggest advantages of remaining where we are.
the Queen cannot tell the GG to do anything she or he likes. Back in the 70's during the whole Whitlam debacle, when the GG contacted the palace they told him that the Queen would prefer to not interfere with Australian politics and that he [the GG] should do what he feels is right. The Queen DID NOT tell anyone to sack the government and to put the opposition in charge, the UK wanted nothing to do with the Whitlam situation because, as I said before, the situation was to be settled by Australia, not a foreign force
I wish bogans would stop banging on about making Australia a republic. I for one actually enjoy having our British ties. Besides, if we left they'd probably take the Queen off the 5 dollar note and I wouldn't be able to fold it to make whale felatio anymore.
but how do you feel about staying so closely aligned to little Britain?
good? why wouldn't we want to be closely aligned with as many people as possible?
They should've called it Aussiexit
No, Ausgang. :v:
