I would be more sympathetic, but Apple is pretty ridiculous with how they release the same product ever year, and charge twice as much.
I have no use for a smartphone because I pretty much only have a phone for emergencies. And I'm going to need a new iPod soon because mine is almost full so they better not discontinue them.
Everyone in my neighborhood is rich anyway, literally everyone and their 4 year old sisters have iPod Touches / iPhones.
All of them going around snickering to eachother, "LOL LETS PLAY COINDOZER" gets really fucking annoying
iPod Touches are quite nice actually.
It's because everyone buys an iPhone instead.
the iPod died once the app or quite possibly the iPod Touch was invented.
Who wants music when you can play Snabbo.
Who wants music when you can play Bird Egg Drop?
or maybe it's declining because of the iphone

The iPod Touch line is considered part of the iPod market. Hence why it is called an iPod Touch.
Well strictly music-playing ipods are on the decline, sure, but the article states that it's because of the music playing capability of smartphones.
Like the iphone
take that apple, yeah
or maybe it's declining because of the iphone
Uhh, yeah? That's exactly what the article is saying. Smartphones are killing the iPod line.

I like having a phone separate from my mp3 player.

I prefer having a single device that does everything I could ever want it to do.
Doesn't seem like the case here.
Apple is a successful company because it realizes what consumers want, and does a good job at making products that do just that. I could elaborate more. If you want.
Seems like a lot of the posters here just dislike the fact that a company is so good in what they do, and that people are willing to pay up for their goods and services.
You guys say the Sony Walkman does great job at doing what it does. Maybe that's true (I haven't used one). But for some reason, Walkmans aren't flying off the shelves. Why? Well it seems most consumers don't want what it has to offer. Seems Apple is a little more keen on what most people want.
That's what's up.
You have to be pretty fucking dense to not realize that people aren't unhappy with apple for their products, but for their business practices.
Apple would be a great company if they sold stuff at least half of what they are currently selling it for.
I put my music on my phone so I never really use my iPod anymore. iPod's are pretty great though for what they're meant for.
Maybe if they included removable storage like a card more people would buy them.
i was about to say "cool maybe that means a decrease in the cost of ipod classic" then i realized this was apple and figured they'd just discontinue it
a shame really, ipod touches are so shit for mp3 players, and the ipod classics are just so fucking fantastic
The iPod touch is one of the greatest music players out there.
I still prefer to be able to make calls and listen to music in the same device, though, so I'd rather buy an iPhone, if I had to.
I spent $300 on a 32 GB iPod touch 4G for one reason:
Longevity.
They really can't significantly improve it anymore, better processor and more RAM maybe, but I have plenty of storage to last me a long time, and probably the most significant upgrade in the series.
I don't have more than 10 gigs of music I actually listen to, but I have extra room if I need it. I can watch TV on it on the go, I have plenty of apps. It's my right hand nowadays.
Personally, I like having both a phone and an iPod. Can listen to music without worrying about my phone battery.
will apple make an app for ipod wills so other devices can inherit the stuff on them?
i love my ipod touch
the interface is great
and having gapless playback on my mp3 player was like a fucking miracle since my zen x-fi didn't and neither did my Zune before that
What a trash article.
The very beginning of the article mentions the end of the heyday for mp3's, hinting that this isn't just affecting apple, and yet they spend the entire article only talking about Apple.
I'd say the fact that it is affecting Apple is a sign that it's clearly a bigger issue that affects more companies. MP3 players in general are being outdated because phones are able to perform all these tasks now. Whether you're talking about the iPhone or Android, or a myriad of other devices, the money is in multi-purpose phones.
Tablets are another area taking the profits away from the MP3 players, because they are portable devices that can not only store and play music, but can be used for tons of other applications.
It's a shit article in my opinion because they focus only on one company, as if to say either they are the only one that matters, or to feed off all the anti-Apple sentiment growing within groups of people with nothing better to complain about than a company they don't even have to pay any attention to.
They should just drop everything and make a new iPod Nano. Best watch I've ever had.

I don't use my iPod touch for music, I use it for apps and web browsing. Which is why I mostly use my ZuneHD for music.
Well yeah, if you got a smarthpone with decent storage, or Google Music, why not?
I think the price is what is driving the majority of people away. If an 8GB iPod touch was say, £80, I'd buy it without much hesitation, but over here in England they're £160.
Also, why don't they offer discounts on the previous models instead of just removing them from stores all together?

Aw man, I still got my 180 gig iPod, which has taken a lot of punishment, and still keeps on trucking.
I don't think I'll ever have enough music to fill it though, and since I got Spotify premium on my smartphone, maybe this is just how things have to be.
