• Google, Twitter and many more internet companies against SOPA considers Total Blackout option

Fucking do it, SHOW THEM. SHOW THEM ALL.
I really hope they do it.
GOOGLE, OH GOD NOT YET!
NOT UNTIL MY RESEARCH PAPERS ARE DONE!

They should do it. I can live without it for a week but not for a lifetime
A week, even a single DAY blacking out services would be amazingly good to protest. Just a black screen saying "We are protesting SOPA. If sopa Passed, this would last more than just a week (or day) [MOREINFOHERE]" would do an amazing job.
I agree with making people aware, but please, don't just shut down everything.
No, this is a shut down everything option. This NEEDS to happen. ONLY when Google or Amazon or Facebook or Twitter does it, will the media pay attention, shove it in everyone's face and have everyone figure out what this bill will do.
If anyone can raise SOPA awareness under the general public, it's these guys.
Greater good. I'll miss you, interwebs, but do what you need to do to stop SOPA.
If they do this, I really hope they don't do it for just 12 hours, as someone suggested. That defeats the entire purpose. They need to get in the way, make it a hassle to use their services, and just be generally annoying. They can't provide a way to get out of it, otherwise it defeats the whole purpose. Doing it for a week would be great. When no one can access their email, or read their news (twitter is a pretty good place to read the news when you're low on time), people will get pissed. That's the entire point of this, and if they can get the word out that SOPA will cause it to be like that forever, that would be amazing. If you can just say "Yeah I get the point, stop blacking it out" no one will actually get the point. That'd be like assuming that everyone reads a EULA or ToS. If you can't opt-out of it, and you're forced to just deal with it, just like real censorship, then the point will get across.
Everyone in the industry should do it to remove alternatives, but this might make me crazy but I would support them more if they did this.
Black out their services until SOPA is shot down. If SOPA passes, permanent shut down. I think that may be a bit too extreme, though it would certainly get the point across. :v:
why would shutting off your services and making them generally shitty help, i genuinely want to know.
why would shutting off your services and making them generally shitty help, i genuinely want to know.
Because if SOPA passes, all those sites listed would end up having to shut down or be forced down because of it and how it will completely break the internet.
why would shutting off your services and making them generally shitty help, i genuinely want to know.
It's a form of protest. They are REALLY big things on the internet that basically serve as the backbone. By shutting down in protest for a bit, they are sending a HUGE message to raise awareness of what SOPA is/prevents/does.
I hope to god google, twitter and facebook go through with this. If the black out affects me or people outside the US I won't be a bit angry because I know what they're fighting for. The more websites the better.
I support this. Sounds like a pretty damn good idea. I just hope nothing too bad would happen due to the blackout.
I don't really care if Google goes down, because I have Bing!
To be honest, if they did this it would be extremely effective just based on how much I use Google everyday. It would get out a pretty powerful message.
I don't really care if Google goes down, because I have Bing!
I would find it highly appropriate if Microsoft conducts in this too by sending a message through its windows live network, which also affects bing.

Better a week of grumble grabble than eternity of censorship and corporate control. Hell, I'd do two weeks. Not that I'm important, but I know that loss of these things are purely first world issues and once upon a time we didn't have this. [editline]6th January 2012[/editline] what's funny is mankind creates the ultimate tool of free speech then tries to mute it out completely and utterly.
SJUT. DOWN. EVERYTHING. It would be interesting to see though, I think with google and Wikipedia both down the grades of every student in america would take a slight dip for that day.
or every student gets an extension or has to go to a Library. do research the old fashion way.
As a Canadian I will still be able to use Google.ca!
Haha Imagine a total Google blackout. Bricks would be shat.
As a Canadian I will still be able to use Google.ca!
I hate to break it to you, but that's still run by Google. Just because it ends in .ca doesn't mean it won't be taken down. You're part of the problem if you think just because you're not in America the bill wont effect you. It will.
do it, poosies
