Lethal gamma-ray burst from star WR 104 could reach earth
Sort of, except the real thrust of it is that quantum mechanics means there's always a chance that the universe will spontaneously jump down to the actual vacuum state. Then every thing would be fucked. A bubble of new universe would expand at nearly the speed of light until it consumed everything. The universe inside the bubble would be unsurvivable. I can't tell you rigorously why this is the case, but the universe inside the bubble is always anti de Sitter space, which is basically a time-reverse Big Bang which would collapse into a singularity in a few microseconds.
Laymen terms please, I've googled it and still don't quite understand it.
More like we'll be long gone from this dumb floating rock
First of all we need another planet with the same gravity, resources and conditions as Earth, I don't think we have found anything like that yet, the universe is so big that it is statistically 100% sure that there are more planets exactly equal to Earth but... the problem is we need to find them.
(Resources and conditions is the least important thing, gravity is the thing that fucks us the more, we couldn't live with different gravity, our biological body is designed for the one we have here and we can't change that)
Anyway, we won't be seeing any of this. Gl to the next generations :v

Shit could theoretically get fucked up and a new universe could appear in the middle of our current universe, it eats everything and inside this new universe nothing survives due to space being a bit of a twat.
so unless it went supernovae like 7900 to 8100 years ago there is nothing to worry about
plus the probability of the ray burst hitting us, the Sol star wind and gravitation not shield us ...
ye, well nice theory but there is 99% higher chance we just kill ourself with some new weapon or so, next !
That's how it works with all radiation, you can't completely block it, just attenuate it
gamma is an EM wave, and yes you can block EM waves
other types of radiation (alpha, beta) are particles and yes you can block them
I really need to stop browsing this forum. It's really bad for my anxiety. Gonna die young because of you fuckers. (I'm not serious about that last bit.)
To be honest I'm not really worried. We could all die any day of the week and none of us would be wiser.
Just enjoy life and live it like it's your last day. Smell some pretty flowers, feel the suns warmth wash over your skin and listen to the birds. Rejoice in the human condition!
At least wait until I'm done with my vacation, fucking universe!
We'll survive
The chances it will hit us are probably 1:10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
I love how space seems to throw series of challenges at Earth, forcing us to innovate and survive.
Then hundreds of hulks are made, making a whole planet full of hulks (hulk doesnt need oxygen apparently). Most powerful race in the universe.

that's okay I didn't want to sleep tonight anyway
Another reason we should start creating an off world alliance of colonies.
Hopefully by the time it blows (or at least the gamma rays from when it blew reaches us) we can have the proper technology to resist radiation (shielding, gene therapy, etc).
Nah man, sorry but you don't resist gamma rays, they just punch through shit regardless.

Yeah except for the problem that none of those things will even impede gamma rays, because they're pretty non reactive.
And by pretty non reactive I mean nearly completely non reactive.

That was beautifully worded

In all honesty, I thought I'd scare myself reading about this but in reality I'm more curious. The thought of an entire Universe just slipping into a different state of being at any time is fascinating and really humbling. Some real science fiction kinda stuff.
The problem with these dangerous stellar phenomena is that they won't hit for several hundred years. Nothing much to really fear.
Worst case scenario, we all become Dr.Manhattan.

I guess I should trust you. After all, you're a weed-smoking frog.
Don't worry guys, it will supernova in exactly 26 564 years, and 3-4months. I know this because my bum is telling me, even then, my bum isn't exactly clear on wether we'll actually be hit by the radiation. This will take some days of serious meditation.
I'll get back to you.

or in the next few seconds - the death ray travels as fast as the light of the event
Yeah the funding for global warming was so worth it rofl

What the fuck are you talking about? Why is facepunch suddenly inundated by cospiracy theory mongos?
G-god will protect us r-right?

It was a fair reply to the ozone being destroyed by somthing else then fattys, 80's hairstyles and cars. Lets go science
Gamma Rays huh? So we're going to be seeing alot of Hulks running around then?
We could see it go supernova anywhere from tomorrow to 500,000 years from now,
Nothing will happen, when it does go supernova, it won't hit us. Carry on like always, nothing happens ever.
There's a million and one ways the universe could wipe us out at any moment without us being able to do a damn thing. Best thing is just not to think about it.
Google "vacuum metastability event." Nature is a dick.
Would be interesting if that has already happened and is coming towards us. One day there is a big black circle in the sky with no stars that keeps expanding (assuming it move slower than light). Yep that'd be terrifying.
Do the burst itself travel slower then the speed of light?
Because if the radiaton have reached our telescopes so that we can observe it. I'm pretty sure that means it already hit us.
