By the way the exact mass of the higgs boson will determine if a vacuum metastability event is possible!

I dunno, because I admittedly don't know the difference between a frog and a toad.
Just as i was done with my anxiety attacks, this triggered it again.
it's so painful

Buckshot Gamma Rays
I wonder if you'd hear this thing explode. Would the gamma rays impact the atmosphere hard enough to cause audible sound vibrations?

They say it's too early to tell for certain, but I'm already building my bunker.
It's super dumb to worry about things you have absolutely no control over. They're gonna happen if they're gonna happen. It sucks, but there's no use in freaking out over it. Like the OP said IF it were to hit us, it would be anywhere in that ridiculous time-frame.
If the vacuum metastability theory proves itself true: who gives a shit - you're dead and you will never know if your universe suddenly shifted stability killing you and everything. It'd be like if someone walked up behind you and shot you with the fastest and most unassuming gun in the world. You wouldn't know and you wouldn't care.

I don't understand why this thread keeps on being bumped.
lol @ anyone thats actually concerned
if i stay inside like I normally do will i be ok
is this the event that will weed out all dna except for the superior indoors dwelling nerd dna
this could be the defining moment in our history

WR104 won't hit us.
One, We aren't going to get hit by this. Another source shows that we are off from the center of it by a decent amount, meaning if it does go nova in our lifetime, it will not affect us.
Two, A vacuum metastability event is nothing to worry about. It most likely will not happen in our lifetime and if it happens to you wont even realize it.
Oh the metastability event is something we should worry about. But this isn't. We'll notice the event slightly before it happens.

You do realize if that happens it will be in billions of years, after life on earth is gone?
Oh the metastability event is something we should worry about. But this isn't. We'll notice the event slightly before it happens.
Quite the opposite. No point in worrying about dying instantly but worry about the very very very slim chance of dying horribly to a radiation holocaust slowly
On the subject of a metastability event...an interesting thing to ponder is if we ever figure out FTL travel, would it be feasible to outrun such an event or am I totally misunderstanding how it works? That'd really be something.

yeah thats not how it works

Not necessarily.

Nope, the entire universe would be completely changed by such a degree that we simply couldn't survive, basically the universe would appear to be stable, but can be disrupted and change to, say, a lower energy state. A bubble of lower-energy vacuum would expand at nearly the speed of light and destroy the universe and be replaced by said low energy vacuum.

Fair enough. For some reason I pictured this bubble as an actual, tangible structure that we would see (assuming the origin was millions of light years away), but now the thought occurs that, assuming it expands at near the speed of light...by the time we saw anything (if we even could), it'd have happened.
Forgive my stupid question.

The hypothetical was doomed when you mentioned FTL travel.
Every second that passes without the universe murdering us is a god damn miracle
Not necessarily.
On the scale of several billion, yes
The sun is expected to become a red giant in 5.4 billion

why could it only happen after that long?
Stop reminding me that in one normal morning I can wake up to a nuclear apocalypse. :tinfoil:

Look at it this way: Your anxiety problems could be permanently ended at any moment.
