Gee, Congress, you have had the opportunity to fix immigration. Mind telling us what's kept you so busy for six years?
A democratic Senate and a Republican house.
For good reason. A person from a destitute village with no education should not be valued as a prospective citizen in the same way as someone who is educated and capable of contributing more to society and their own bank accounts. If a country wants immigrants to come and stay there, they're gonna want the cream of the crop, not some random people for the hell of it.
Not everyone who is poor is "from a destitute village with no education". A lot of them are hardworking and are just trying to find a better life for their children, who may grow up more educated and contribute more to our society.
if it helps my dad get work documents easier then I'm for it

Under the new proposed immigration system, it will be MUCH easier to obtain citizenship status for immigrants, which is good because I have family in Ukraine I would love to see come here too. I hope the best for your old man
Fuck, why'd I even join the Army iffin I coulda just waltzed right the fuck in here and got off scottfree.
5 million new voters for the Democrats ?
I think you missed the part where
they're NOT CITIZENS
Says you? I think anyone should be able to live wherever they want as long as they aren't like known criminals or something. And since we're a democracy, who gets to move here is who we collectively decide gets to move here.
It's a nice thought but not really fair to tax payers who have been paying into the system their entire lives. Others shouldn't just be able to move here and reap the benefits. It really is a shame what is happening in a lot of these places but opening up borders isn't going to solve their country's problems and could only introduce new issues into our own.

If a person really wants to become a citizen, they should do so legally instead of trying to cheat the system. Of course, there's no guarantee to getting accepted as one, but since when did a country ever guarantee it would want any specific person?
Yeah, let's let the cartels just come on over and set up shop here too, as if they don't already fuck shit up in that region.
Do you know US history?

could you elaborate? I'm not quite understanding but I'm interested in your argument
also yes, ideally we'd do something to make Mexico not fucking terrible as well

...yet.
Not citizens, yet.
I don't think most Americans realize how fucking difficult it is to gain American citizenship. Also the idea of hating immigrants in the fucking United States of America is a laughable concept to me.

We always hate our immigrants until the new one comes along. The Irish, Italians, Asians, Middle-Easterners, and now Latino/Hispanics.
Its history and it repeats itself
Says you? I think anyone should be able to live wherever they want as long as they aren't like known criminals or something. And since we're a democracy, who gets to move here is who we collectively decide gets to move here.
So instead of choosing the most productive and well-educated people, you want just anybody to roll on through as long as they aren't criminals? A country should have an immigration standard reflecting its standing in the world. And since the U.S. is the hegemony in the world, the standard should be high enough that we get the best people to come on in, settle down, and join the family.
Also, if you think any citizen who isn't obscenely influential politically has any input on who gets to come in and who doesn't, you're pretty wrong.
many are trying to escape the violence and destitution created by the drug cartels you mentioned. in their mind, they'll be dead by the time they're be let in legally, assuming they ever would be in the first place.
Yeah, they have shit lives they're trying to escape. Why exactly is that the U.S.'s problem?
Do you know US history?
If you're referring to the mass influxes of immigration we've had through our history, that's a bit different considering the U.S. was a shitstain in comparison to what it is today to what it was previously. We're the most powerful and advanced country in the world right now. The government should get to pick and choose who they want to be a part of it.
My girlfriend is an immigrant with a green card. I hope she can get it renewed when it expires (within the next 5 years).
Well there's one way she gets it without issue.
instead of spending millions of taxpayer dollars to deport people who don't affect the economy?? yea
Point to where I said anything about deporting people.

obv talking idealistically here
but no I don't agree with you at all because our own education system consistently fails to produce these productive and well-educated citizens you seem to think our standard is
that or at least take "give us your huddled masses" off the Statue of Liberty
Point to where I said anything about deporting people.
this is not an alternative to immigration reform, the two are independent from one another. the alternative to protecting immigrants from deportation is deporting them.
Keep in mind that in July he was going to start using executive powers to handle immigration because House Republican Speaker John Boehner said that the GOP was going to keep blocking votes on any immigration bills that the senate managed to pass.

so Obama tried to let our representatives do their jobs, but I guess he wasn't satisfied with their performance.

We clearly produce enough to keep ourselves on top of everyone else. Who knows for how long, but we're in lead for now. Even if most of our own don't reach up to the immigration standard, they're natural citizens. Not like we can just get rid of them considering they have an actual legal and historical basis for being here.
Also, we're gonna need the Statue of Liberty in as much of a pristine condition as possible to help appease our future fly overlords.
see it depends, you are prioritizing global economic power, I am prioritizing human welfare like the naive idealistic liberal I am
"Immigration is bad and only bad things happen because of it. By the way, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for immigration."
Typical Americans derka derka.
Someone already posted a video on this but undocumented migrants are 53% of farmworkers. They pay taxes- billions into social security and billions into sales taxes and payroll taxes. The border is unsecurable and conditions brought on by American demands have caused problems down south. We can't rely on their labor for 70 years, extract taxes and benefits from the value they extract through their labor, and yet promote ourselves as this haven melting pot made of immigrants. Open the borders, cut down the immigration process, and legalize illegals. Tearing up families, exploiting working people, and taxation without representation, all the while relying on their labor. Over a line drawn literally in the sand and some xenophobic bigots.
I get this is only a small step but since we haven't had shit on immigration and haven't addressed the issue for a long time then anything's better than nothing. I'm not really sure we should be twiddling our thumbs for legislation that won't come until the Republican congress, which would be undesirable and shitty, no doubt.
Gotta say, this is a good deal. Mexico is a terrible place to be right now, and since most of the immigrants are Mexican, sending them back is fairly inhumane.

Because democrats are such huge proponents of making sure that only positively-identified US citizens get to vote
Because democrats are such huge proponents of making sure that only positively-identified US citizens get to vote
Not that non-citizens vote anyhow.
This fella i responded to voted me optimistic, but there's only one study out of many in the last few years that has said "yes, lots of non-citizens vote." Clearly there isn't the data to support the idea that we have voter fraud.
plus whats so bad about people who are taxed voting? no taxation without representation right? if you live in a community and are subject to the laws of that community what harm does it do if you get a say in that community? first they take our jobs now they take our votes!!
I'm torn myself as I hate immigrants personally, but I believe they have a right to live here as we do.
I've seen first generation immigrants tear the shit out of areas where they migrate to and exploit the hell out of people living here, but I've also seen some people who have become genuinely admirable, inclusive, generous, and dare I say successful - and assimilate.
I think Obama's doing the right thing in this case. Send the ones with serious or violent misdemeanors home too, however.
We live in fucking Northern VA, the immigrants here are all as rich as the white people, and they're mostly Asian or Indian and LEGAL

Why do you rate him dumb and try to refute his point with anecdotal evidence?
