I doubt it actually knows what it looks like.
There was probably others over a long period of time that used materials as decoys, but those that made a decoy that was the closest to a spider's shape probably survived more often, so this one is probably just the best shaped decoy that we can see.
Just natural selection and luck probably.

I've got 4 tarantulas. They are cute as fuck. My favorite one let's me hold him all the time. Needless to say, I am not afraid of spiders at all anymore. I let them chill around my place because they rule.
The bigger fat ones are okay, but the ones what are big and have skinny legs etc are fucking freaky.

I'm the other way around.
The ones with big bodys creep me out cuz it just doesn't look right. They seem too meaty to be spiders.
The little ones, though, just look too fragile for me to worry about them.

Yeah... it just doesn't feel like something like this would be created by instinct... It doesn't look like a naturally occurred coincidence that caught on due to natural selection, it looks like it took enough intelligence to know that if you built a decoy to look like yourself then your enemies would go for that instead.
